I recently saw a Champion Air 727 at DSM (Des Moines, Iowa). Can anyone give me some background info on this airline and what it might be doing in Des Moines?

Thanks

Paul

1995- Champion Air MGM;MG/CCP Minneapolis/Los Angeles Originally formed as Front Page Tours. Reorganized 1995 by American Int'l using MGM Grand Air assets.

They are a charter company that only operates 727s. They fly pretty much everywhere.  Big thumbs up

They are flying now using the tried and true method that was a success for ATA and SunCountry. They work with a few vacation wholesalers, like Funjet and Applevacations, maybe MTM, who then resell the seats to travel agents as part of a vacation package deal to such places as LAS and CUN.

I've flown them myself -they have an all coach interior and their 727s are obviously older, but the crews were friendly and I'd fly them again. Sometimes they offer very cheap flights available only from them or the travel section of your newspaper...when the travel agents have failed to sell all the seats on the plane.

kind regards,

RogueTrader

NWA owns most or all of them, I believe.

Service tends to be remarkably good for the genre (in the air); their ground handling at DFW is wretched, though.

Saab, I've seen it parked on the GA ramp at Des Moines. Most of the time it's used for charters to Cancun and other destinations during Spring Break.

The Toronto Blue Jays used them for a few seasons as their main transport.

Celebrities also chartered them. I saw the Rolling Stones use their DC-8 for a tour in the early 90's.

The greasy 8 was surely something to see inside. Had a full bar, sleep cabins and private rooms and a large lounge area.

A flying drink and smoke fest, I'm sure.

Just a minor correction. The largest client of MG is MLT/Worry Free Vacations, a wholly owned subsidiary of NWA Inc.
