Nothing like a little crosswind

I was recently on a United Airlines flight from ORD to TPA (727) which was bringing me back home. There was quite a strom that passed through and apparently it had left some winds behind. We were on final to 18R even though the winds seemed to be heading about 080. Runway 9 was too crowded so we were asighned 18R. It was VERY gusty and when we reached about decision height, our plane must have been crabbed 10° to the right. Maybe more..I don't know. When we landed....we touched down quite firmly(normal for these conditions, no business foating) and took a hard bounce in the direction of the runway.
Now for the point(sorry)
For the pilots on the forum, how bad have the crosswinds gotten? Did your aircraft behave the same way during touchdown? What is the best Technique to use?
I am wondering why the Pilot didn't use the side slip technique to minimize the side stress on the wheels.
Everyone else: How many of you have seen oe also experienced such a landing? I have seen some great pix on the site of such landings. Its quite a sight to see!!!

Well on final you point your nose into the wind depending how strong it is and put you alierons the other way to help aswell and then you land on one wheel first as one wing is lower then the other. Then slowly let the other whel and nose down. It is quiet hard to explain doing it will teach you many times better then me.

If he was crabbing, then he was slipping.
The touchdown has to be firm.
You want the upwind gear boggie to touch down firm by lowering the upwind wing just before touchdown. This plants that baby on hard surface without letting any wind get under that wing and possbly lifiting it.

Once at GSO, there were 40mph steady winds with 60-70mph gusts blowing from the west. I was spotting, and a USAir DC-9-30 had a very hard time landing, then an AA F-100 came in and he had to do and aborted takeoff because a large gust blew him a few hundred feet to the right of the runway just before he crossed the runway. Then a C172 came in! He was bouncing all over the place and being blown all around. He made a very fast apporach and crabbed a lot. He used over 6000ft of the runway before touching down, and right before he touched down, a gust almost slammed his right wing into the runway. That was an amazing sight.

At DEN Intl a few days ago, they were registering winds of 95+mph. I wasn't there, so I don't know what it was like, but it must have been a sight.
