Just looking at the United States, the prime example is MIA (missing in action). Two in the New York area are ISP (internet service provider) and SWF (single white female). There must be others.

BBC= Bay City, Texas (British Broadcasting Corporation)
IMO= Zemio, Central Africa Republic (In my opinion)
DOA= Doany, Madagascar (Dead On Arrival)
DUI= Duisburg, Germany (Driving Under the Influence)
