I'm an avid NASCAR fan, and this came as a bit of a shock when my mom told me about it.

NASCAR team owner Jack Roush was severely injured in a private plane crash in Alabama. He's in critical but stable condition in Birmingham, AL at the University of Alabama Trauma Center. Details are still sketchy, I haven't heard what type of plane it was, or anything else.

I'm also a pretty big NASCAR fan...I've been following this pretty closely...
Apparently he was flying a restored P-51 Mustang...He was put into an induced coma at a hospital in Birmingham. He has severe burns, internal injuries, and two broken legs. Much of this info comes from http://www.jayski.com ...
Hang in there, Jack...

From Talladega Speedway's Site:
Roush Racing owner Jack Roush is listed as critical but in stable condition, at the intensive care unit at University of Alabama, Birmingham Medical Center, after being injured in a plane crash late Friday afternoon near Troy, AL. Roush suffered closed head injuries but, according to his attending physician, he is "following commands." Other injuries include minor chest and internal injuries and fractures to his lower extremities. All Roush Racing teams scheduled to race this weekend at Talladega Superspeedway will do so as planned, including Greg Biffle, who will start today's BGN Race. Drivers Mark Martin, Jeff Burton, Matt Kenseth and Kurt Busch will compete in Sunday's Winston Cup competition.
From http://www.thatsracin.com
NASCAR team owner Jack Roush remained in critical condition Saturday morning after a small aircraft he was flying crashed Friday afternoon. Roush, whose 60th birthday was Friday, crashed into a pond in northern Pike County near the Alabama city of Troy, which is about 150 miles south of Talladega Superspeedway, the site of this weekend’s NASCAR activity. Troy Police Chief Anthony Everage told the Troy Messenger newspaper that Roush was flying a one-person lightweight aircraft when it crashed into a pond near the Palos Verdes Estates subdivision off U.S. 231 about 6 p.m. local time Friday (7 p.m. Eastern). Sources at the track Saturday morning said the aircraft hit some power lines before crashing into the pond. Roush was apparently underwater for several minutes before local resident Larry Hicks, who witnessed the crash, came to Roush’s assistance. Roush’s injuries include broken bones in both legs and damage to his ribs. He was taken first to Edge Regional Medical Center in Troy, then flown to University Hospital in Birmingham, arriving there around 10:15 p.m. local time. Hicks reportedly suffered minor burns in his efforts to assist Roush and was treated and released at the Troy hospital. Roush Racing officials were expected to hold a news conference updating Roush’s condition later Saturday morning at the Talladega track
So...apparently it was a small experimental plane...ultralight?

Yeah, FX said during Happy Hour that he was in a twin-engine experimental aircraft, and Chris Myers said the name of the plane, which sounded like Aircam. It seems like Jack is improving! Hopefully, everything will be fine.

Jack Roush loves flying. He was flying that plane, and owns 3 727s that he uses for transporting teams to/from the races. I saw them in CLT when taxiing out & on Fox Sports Net the other day. He also restores P-51s.

Bill Elliott and Rusty Wallace also own & fly planes. They said during the Texas race that while there, Elliott was learning how to fly helicopters.

Good news about Jack...hope he recovers fully. Helluva b-day present, though

Don't forget Mark Martin. He is a pilot (only smaller Cessnas) Rusty Wallace has a Learjet, and is captain of it... (that makes it sound like a ship...) http://www.lasvegassun.com/sunbin/stories/rac-400/2001/feb/28/511496810.html

I agree with you, Hurricane- helluva present! That's pretty ironic that something like this would happen on his own birthday!

Didn't know about Mark Martin being a pilot, interesting.

Mark also owns a private jet (don't know what type) and lives next to an airport - like right on the airport. The back of his house is a hangar for his airplane...

Yea, most drivers have some sort of aircraft. Dale Jarrett has a helicopter, Jeff Gordon (ughh) has (had) a Dassult 200, etc...

OMG! I hope he is OK! This is a tragedy for all of Nascar. My prayers go out for a quick and speedy recovery

Hey Hurricane, I've noticed that you are a pretty good Nascar driver. Who's your favorite? Mine has to be the "Wildman" from Vegas, Kurt Busch. We may not agree on political issues, but we both agree of our hatred for Jeff Gordon, lol.

Not a Mustang:
"Smith described the plane that Roush was flying as a twin-engined experimental “Aircam,” not Roush’s P-51 Mustang World War II fighter plane, as had been speculated in various media."

Sorry if this was already posted.

Yea, I was about to say, National...I only have my permit! (Though I am pretty darn good on the computer game!)
My fav is Dale Jarrett, but I pretty much like any Ford. I pull for all Roush Drivers, especially Kenseth & Busch!
Oh yea... I hate (with a passion) Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart...ughh...

Keeping with the aviation theme, I'm pretty sure it was one of those 'Aircams.' True, Roush does own a few P-51s, only 1 was airworthy and I'm sure he didn't fly a vintage WWII fighter all the way from North Carolina to Alabama...

What elese is remarkable is the guy who saved him was a ex underwater recsue marine who triained for this sort of thing, never had to use it during his service. If you could chose where to crash I guess this would be a good place, as Roush's plane crashed in this guys back yard practically. When I was at Talledega Sunday the papers had this guys story and he was uncomfortable being called a hero. He says heros are parents who raise their kids up right.. Sounds like a classy guys to me

BTW D.J also has a jet regd N88DJ in addition to a helo which he gives Little E rides in

Didn't know DJ had a plane! Neato...
The guy who saved him supposedly had cancer and wasn't expected to live as long as he did...Sounds like a miracle to me...
