So it is true. LH is bringing the 747-200 classic back into service. Anywhere else that it will be flown?? YVR looks to be the only N. American city that will get it back!!! All others will be the 744 or 340!!??

don´t know if other cities will receive 742 service again. Lufthansa will bring back only two of its 742s and so another destinations, such as JFK or BOS, would be possible. but i don´t know, perhaps they´ll have the other 742 as a back-up plane (in this case, not only for YVR i suppose).
cheers

Ndebele, why is it a shame to bring back those 742s ?? The 742s LH brings back into service were built in 1987 (I think they will take the newer ones), that's not too old for an aircraft, I think. In fact, there are other planes in LH's fleet that are older (the older 733s). Nearly all major airlines fly planes that are 15 years old or older. And the LH-planes are very well maintained.
If the events of 11 September hadn't happened, those 742 wouldn't even have been withdrawn from sercice and stored for the time until now.
I think it's really great that those birds are back in the air. As a spotter, I like the variety. And as a passenger, I don't think the 742s are worse than the 744s (keep in mind that the oldest 744 in the LH-fleet is only two years newer than those 742s that are back in service now...)

Ndebele,
in every LH post during the past two weeks, you have mentioned that "it is a real shame to bring those 742s back into service". I really think that most of the people are aware of your opinion about this.
So if you do NOT have anything to say concerning the topic, would you mind not saying anything at all??

The two aircraft to be reactivated will be D-ABYX (first delivered on 02/25/1982) and D-ABZE (01/16/1987), thus respectively 20 and 15 years of service. They will be operated on the Vancouver route starting on the 1st of June and also serve as back-up aircraft.

SailorOrion: Sorry I was not aware that anybody reads *all* my post (obviously you do ). To be honest, I did not realize that I made the same statement four times - it's just that I was really glad to see those old 742s leave LHs fleet. LH started retiring the 742 when I started spotting in the early 90s, finally they have finished! And now that they're coming back, I don't know what else to say than guess what...? Yes it IS a shame. But next time there is a 742-topic I won't express my shame in yet another post (if that is what you want to hear).
To say something concerning the topic: LHs 742s have been due to be retired for a long time now, so I don't think that LH spent much money in those soon-leaving aircraft. Of course, they did the usual maintenance, but they probably didn't spend anything e.g. in updating the cabin and in-flight entertainment - and even on newer LH aircraft the IFE is not the best. Can anybody who has travelled on an LH 742 recently confirm?!
ps: If you want to see people expressing their opinion again and again, go to the non_aviation forum and do a search for "Israel"

I just got an email from Lufthansa and they told me that two 747-200'S will be brought back (D-ABYX/ZE) and they will ONLY fly FRA-YVR. Exceptions may be made. The first flight with the old beauties from Frankfurt/Main will be on June 1st as LH 492 leaving at 1320. Lufthansa Technik will update them to have them modified to the newest technologies (whatever that means, I guess they mean an update of the cabin) and they will also get new landing gears.
I hope that I will manage to fly with them before they will leave the fleet again.

Ndebele I agree. It's time for the 200 to retire. I flew one last in 98. And even then it apeared as if it's to be retired soon. The seats were the LH 80's style and felt really worn out and the overall condition was not that good. They had problems with the cabin lights and the engineer disappeared through the cabin floor to the lower deck to fix that problem. The flight was only few weeks after SR111 crashed and I did not feel very comfortable.
I had the same experiance on a LH DC10 in 1994. This one looked very tired as well, even though it was fun to get one of the last flights to ATL in that classic.

I for one am happy to hear that they are heading back to the fleet. They were a spotters delight here in EWR were we normally got Airbused out with A340s.
