After just posting a reply to my topic on Hong Kong, it has encouraged me to ask some questions.

I really am not trying to start a which alliance is better in general, but I just want to know your opinions as to which alliance best serves the following destinations.

In college (several years away), I plan on traveling to the following destinations. (Now remember there are a lot here, but not all are college related, some are just for personal travel) I realize that most people who travel abroad in college only travel to one or maybe two places depending on their major.

So, to the following destinations, which airline is best?

NYC-STR and or TXL
NYC-SYD
NYC-HKG
FRA-CPT

Is it Star, One World, or Sky Team. I don't mind connections, so that doens't influence my decision. Sorry to burden you with my dreams, but I am looking foward to your responses and input.

NYC-STR/TXL doesn't really matter. You have to change planes anyway. Either go for Skyteam via ATL or CDG or Star Alliance via FRA/VIE.

For FRA-CPT you can just take the LH service vie JNB.

NYC-SYD again doesn't matter. Either Oneworld or Star Alliance via LAX/SFO.

NYC-HKG either the CO nonstop or UA (Star ALliance) via ORD. But of course there are other possibilities as well.

B737-700,
Is CO a member airline with UA Mileage Plus?

Alitalia777

P.S.- I was wondering about airlines a little more. Which alliance has better airlines to these destinations.

For the NYC to HKG and SYD flights, I'd choose StarAlliance and SQ.

JFK-FRA-SIN-SYD SQ
JFK-FRA-SIN-HKG SQ

I don't know why, but that route is more appealing to me. Would there be more frequent flyer points?

OK Alitalia777. So let me try this again.
First of all it looks like you don't get any miles on UA when flying CO. So the answer is no.

Assuming we are talking about economy class I'd say this.

1.NYC-STR/TXL with Air France (Skyteam) via CDG. Try to get on a B777. They have a nice ife and decent food + seats.
Of course you could also take BA via Heathrow on the 777.

4. FRA-CPT with BA via Heathrow. Probably better than LH in coach.

Don't really know about the others.

Personally, I would do it all those flights on a OneWorld Ticket.

If you are doing a RTW or Oneworld ticket, my suggestions are:

1) NYC (EI) DUB (BA/EI) LON (BA) STR/TXL... or NYC (AY) HEL (AY) TXL

2) NYC (QF) SYD one plane service... or NYC (LA) SCL (LA) SYD or NYC (LA) SCL (LA) IPT (LA) PPT (QF) AKL?!?

3) NYC (CX) HKG

4) FRA (BA) LON (BA) CPT

4)

NYC-SYD
Star: NYC-LAX-SYD (United/ANZ)
Oneworld: NYC-LAX-SYD (American/Qantas)

NYC-HKG
Star: NYC-SFO-HKG (United/Singapore)
Oneworld: NYC-SFO-HKG (American/Cathay)
Wings: NYC-SFO-NRT-HKG (Northwest)

FRA-CPT
Star: FRA-CPT (LH/SAA Codeshare)
Oneworld: FRA-MAD-CPT (Iberia) / FRA-LHR-CPT (BA)
Skyteam: FRA-CDG-CPT (Air France)
Wings: FRA-AMS-CPT (KLM)

Has anyone flown BA on NYC-LHR-BKK or SIN-SYD? If so, how is that? Is it much longer than NYC-LAX-SYD?

Star Alliance would be your best bet for those flights.

Well , OneWorld is better

NYC-HKG with CX
NYC-SYD with AA/QF via LAX
NYC-STR/TXL with BA via LHR

Next flights : BRU-ZRH-CAI (LX)/ BRU-FCO-TLV (AZ)

I think I like the One World flights better, but I don't like that you can't earn AA miles flying BA transatlantic.

Maybe that will change sometime within the next few years.

To STR a good possibility is by Swiss to Zurich, from there you are very fast in STR (Swiss is not in an alliance yet but has a wide codeshare agreement with AA, and applies for Oneworld).
