What do you think the loudest airport is in the United States I guess per capita of loud aircraft to quiet aircraft if you get what I am trying to ask... also the quietest. Note- NOT including military movements at airport if airport shares with air base.
In other words if you had a somewhat sensitive car alarm how often would it go off with planes taking off.
I might say DTW is the loudest airport in the US (tie with MSP) because of all of those NW DC-9s. At the south employee lot at DTW, everytime a DC-9 takes off it sets off about 20 car alarms. On top of that, there are still quite a few 727s and an occasional SW 732 taking off too. The DC-10s and 744s have a real rumble too that can set off car alarms. I have heard car alarms go off when a 744 takes off on runway 22L, but the car is parked under 21R takeoff.
The quietest I would say probably is John Wayne in Orange County with all of their noise restrictions.

Don't forget proximity to the city itself. MSP is right in town, unlike a lot of major airports that seem to be way out in the middle of nowhere (DTW, DEN come to mind). There always seems to be jet noise above me. But I'd have it no other way. When NW went on strike a few years back and post 9/11 when planes weren't flying, it was a quiet, uncomfortable feeling.

I forgot to mention Miami. They have a lot of classic DC-8s and 727s flying out of there, not so much DC-9 anymore and you really don't see 707s I don't think. But Miami is very close to downtown. I have been downtown when a 747 took off overhead it was pretty loud...
So that would probably be MSP, MIA or DTW for the loudest because of all the aircraft that had to be Stage III updated.
I said John Wayne because I don't think you ever see 727s or DC-9s do you? Everything is pretty much 73G, 757 and A320 right?

HNL is pretty loud. Aloha flies their fleet of 737-200's, and let me tell you, those are pretty loud!!! It used to be a lot louder when Hawaiian still had their DC-9's, but they hushed up with their 717's now. Nevertheless, there are still a lot of DC-10's and 747's over there too.

yeah but there are a lot of recently upgraded Stage III aircraft at DTW, there are a lot more DC-9s than Aloha 732s, plus I think DC-9s are louder than 732s.

My last trip to the nations's capitol (the USA that is) convinced me that Reagan-National's close proximity to so many tourist attractions, the Mall, offices certainly makes it one of the most sound unfriendly airports.
Of course, the turbofan whine of a departing Airbus or 757 (soon) only enhances my vist to the Lincoln or Iwo Jima memorials.

You are all missing the boat. Aviation noise is measured on a cumulative basis with a penalty for nightime operations. Given these conditions, the airports with significant nighttime operations are considered the loudest. Therefore Miami and Memphis are the leaders.

I didnt mean by laws and regulations.
I just meant who has the loudest amount of aircraft that take off during the day, planes such as DC-9s, 727s etc. Since Northwest has more probably more barely Stage III exceptable aircraft with all of those DC-9s and 727s, thats why I picked DTW

I would have to say that either LGB or Bakersfield have to be one of the quietest airports around, after all LGB doesnt have more than 15 flights a day right now, but that will soon change.....
