Orange County (SNA) Becomes An Int'l Airport!

Well not REALLY an international airport, today Alaska Airlines inaugurated 1 daily non-stop flight to Vancouver (YVR) from John Wayne Airport (SNA). Big grin

What do you mean "not REALLY"? Of course flights between the U.S. and Canada are international.

Alaska has done a good job at initiating a number of flights out of Vancouver over the past few years.

They really do not have any room for terminal expansion or runway expansion with out some major changes in the area- one idea they had mentioned at one point was to remove all the general aviation parking to the south? of the airport- Campus/near I think Bristol- then I think move the current cargo ops down there and build an extension onto the current terminal.

As for the runway, the idea was to expand it over the 405-freeway. Have the freeway go under, the runway go over.. but I dont see that happening, especialy with the current construction- they are currently trying to make the interchange from the 405 to the 55 easier, and are building a separate ramp going from the carpool lane off to the 55... it would have to be torn down to expand the runway over and make the freeway go under. The Newport Beach residensts would fight it if they ever tried to expand that airport. They let the area around it get too built up... its time they stop wasting money on it and look elsewhere- if only ElToro would have gone thru. Hopefully the lawsuit they are planning to use to put the airport back on track later this year works out.

YVR-SNA flight#598 leave 1:35PM arrive 4:36PM

Right now the problem is not runway capacity (although a longer runway would help) , it is flight caps and gates space. They only have 14 gates at that airport. They do have plenty of room to add more gates to the west of the terminal and there are some proposals in the works to add a couple more. They really need to do something to tkae thier fair share of air travel. Orange County generated 20% of all regional aviation demand in 1997--the latest year for which figures are available--it served only 9.4% at John Wayne. In contrast, the same year Los Angeles generated 58% of the regional demand, but served 81%

Officially, an airport is internation only if it houses customs.

Flights to international destinations do not define an airport as an international airport.

SNA's runway should be extended. It's length only 5,700 feet if I'm not mistaken! I bet 737's and M-80's just barley make it off the runway!

Not to worry GD727. They rotate with plenty of runway to spare. But it's only a matter of time before one goes off 19R and right into the 73 freeway.
