Why would Aer Lingus waste it's money (either buying or leasing) on a plane that they don't really need? I agree that the A340 is a nice plane, my sister has flown on it with Sabena and she liked it and it would add "variety" as you say.
Yet unless Aer Lingus starts flying to places like Japan or Australia nonstop from Ireland, the furthest destination they presently fly to nonstop (Los Angeles) is easily handled by the "little sister", the A330-200 which Ii have personally flown on.
I would be nice to spice up their fleet but technically they are doing that during the summer months with a leased MD-11 from World Airways. I was fortunate enough to witness the MD-11 fly to Boston a couple of times this past summer.

You're absolutely right about the other carriers, especially the European ones who fly a variety of different aircraft to destinations here in the US. From a cost stand point however it just doesn't make sense for "Shamrock" to invest in those kinds or aircraft. From an aesthetic standpoint though it would be nice! How about an Aer Lingus Concorde? Boston to Shannon in 2 1/2 hours?
You'd also beinterested to know that the Boeing 747-400 which was heavily touted when it first came out only has two US commercial customers? United and Northwest! Quite frankly many of the US carriers have a rather boring selection as well. My wife flew from Boston to San Francisco last year on a 757! I remember when they flew 747's, DC-10's, and L-1011's from coast to coast!

While it could be a while, don't say no just yet to the A340 in the shamrock colours. I know a couple of pilots in EI, and during a conversation I had with one of them last year I mentioned the A340. Like the rest of you I said that there was no need, but he felt that once Aer Lingus is floated (later this year) they will have the cash to expand further. He also claimed that not only did EI have unused rights to fly to Tokyo, but that they were also very keen to get going on the Singapore/Hong Kong routes. Now how much of this is true or not, I can't say, but when pilots in the airline mention these rumours, you gotta take a little notice. Take into account the tie up with ONEWORLD and Qantas as a partner to feed traffic on from these routes as well as JAL and you have a case for the A340 in the fleet. (Don't forget cross-qualified crews)

exactly, a tie up with oneworld means that they feed traffic into LHR, and BA/CX/JL take people to Asia. Indeed there doesn't seem much of a need for them to fly to Asia. If they flew to LAX with a larger load, then it might call for a A340 where a 330 can't do it, but apart from that.......

I think the good souls at Cathay have cornered the world's supply of surplus A340s for a long time to come - and good luck to them. BUT for Aer Lingus, I would think they would probably go for the A330-300X, which - with its increased MTOW of 233t - would easily provide the range required to Dublin - LA - and with an intermediate stop, could probably hit Asian destinations too.
However, looking into the long term, with pax figures growing and nothing in the A330 line bigger than the -300, they might need to look at the larger A340s for routes like Chicago and JFK. As was said, don't rule it out yet.

Well as several of my fellow colleagues have mentioned, the fact that Aer Lingus will likely go public sometime later this year (looking forward to picking up some shares!) and the fact that they have joined OneWorld will give them much needed exposure to further routes and ability to pick up more aircraft.
It would be interesting to see Aer Lingus fly to Japan or Australia. My brother in law is in the US Army based on Okinawa Island, maybe I can visit him via Dublin or Shannon!
The only thing I would be concerned about is that from an economic standpoint, Aer Lingus must be very careful not to expand too quickly. Granted the economy is doing, for the most part, very well on a global basis. However if you recall what happened in Asia several years ago with the crashing of the economies of several countries, many carriers had to pull back their operations for the lack of profitability. American Airlines was to start the first nonstop between Boston and Tokyo in the Fall of 1997 but had to cancel because of the Asian economic crisis. It is January of 2000 and we are still waiting for our first nonstop to the Far East!
