Britannia And The A330?!

Hi,

When BY (and the rest of the TUI gang) introduced the new colour sheme, I remember someone on this forum saying that "Britannia has chosen the A330 as its new long haul aircraft type".
I've had a search for this comment, but I can't find it anywhere!
Now supprisingly no one seemed to comment on this statement, but BY has always been a loyal Boeing customer and was the 1st non US airline to operate the B767- their current l/h aircraft.

I've never read any statement by BY about this or heard any further rumours, so was it just someone telling porkies?!?!

No decision has been reached about the A330 just yet.

The only official comment made by Preussag is that the new fleet will comprise of A330-200 OR B767-400 for widebody( not sure what is to become of the 4 remaining 767-200 or the 10 767-300 ) and 737-900X OR the A321 for narrowbody operations.

I would think Preussag are in the process of playing Airbus off against Boeing and visa versa..

That's very interesting and certainly news to me that BY & Co. ARE looking at the A332.

Does the B764 have enough range to fly full (in charter configuration) & non stop from London or Manchester to all of the destinations BY serves in the Carribean? It's just there's often talk about weight restrictions on long B764 routes.

Another point is that BY would be able to seat alot more passengers in the A332- Monarch's can carry 374 passengers (in a two class configuration).

I don't know much about Britannia. They already operate a fleet of 737-800s so you would guess the 767-400ER would be more interesting, but if Airbus can give a competitive offer to Britannia it would be interesting for Britannia as well. Airbus may pursuade Britannia to replace their 737-800 fleet with the A320 family. The A330-200 does offer more range and capacity than the 767-400ER. Who knows what's going to happen, we'll just have to wait  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

The range of a B767-400 is a problem, but as stated before, Boeing will develop a type for Britannia with tanks in the rear stabilizers...we are a good customer.

We are in a good position at the moment. We are an airline with a fleet of 88 aircraft( TUI Airline group ). Thats big by any airline standards.....The debate between Airbus and Boeing will continue, both wanting our business, and no doubt, we will recieve the best price possible. Thanks for taking an interest.....

There has been talk of us getting the 767-400 since I came to BY 3 years ago. My bet is we'll end up with the A330-200 though, Airbus will give a good price and the range of the A332 does make some of our routes less tight (Cancun springs to mind as one even the 763 can struggle on sometimes).

What we have now is a nice mix of short and long-haul flying, as all our pilots are certified to fly all our aircraft (752/762/763). All the 738s are in Scandinavia now, they didn't work for us on the UK charters from smaller airports like we thought, due to performance issues.

It would be a shame to get the A332 for long-haul as that would mean a separate pilot pool for shorthaul and long-haul. Right now I enjoy the mix.



I used to love the smell of Jet-A in the morning...
