Flew VS22 IAD-LHR non-rev about 2 weeks ago, and initially at the ticket counter, they upgraded me into Premium Economy, and gave me a lounge invite to their clubhouse. At the clubhouse, they gave me a boarding pass for Upper Class, on the 340. Treatment was outstanding, and I don't even work for Virgin.
Make sure you call their 800 number and list more than 24 hrs in advance, for meal purposes. I was gonna flew them back to IAD last week, so I called to list and ask for their upgrade policy. The woman said that generally Premium Economy is the highest they will upgrade other airline employees, but I guess it depends on the airport, and station personnel.

VS gave me an upgrade BOS-LGW but a last minute full fare pax came along booking in upperclass(the flight was booked solid) and they had to move me back to econo, but the service was great, and they brought me a meal back from up front

Mel - you must have been extremley luck to get u/g to upper on VS. I work for VS at LHR and cannot even get u/g to upper until I have 5 years service !!. They are very strict on u/g on flights ex LHR/LGW as people that worked at head office complained that they were not getting treated fairly when they travelled, as they didn't work at the airport, so did not have the inside info/contacts to be able to swing an u/g and usually other airline staff do not get u/g at all (cutbacks since 11/9/01) - not even into Premium unless you happen to know the correct people to speak to, but the res agent was correct that Premium would be the best you would get, but as you said - it all depends on the airport/staff on duty that day !!.

bottom line though VS was great
