Hello,

Here is a message from Qatar;

Qatar Airways have anounced today in a press conference that they will start flying non-top to the US from Doha in 2004. The first destination will likely be New York and then Qatar Airways will expand to more destination in the US aswell as Canada in late 2004.

The CEO has also said that a decision will be taken soon on the future fleet plan [B777 or A340-500]. The growth and passenger levels have exceeded the airlines expectations and the airline predicts double digit growth for at least the next 8-10 years and so Qatar Airways will likely place a larger order than what was expected earlier. As was indicated earlier Qatar Airways is looking into ordering more A380s over the existing 2 + 2 order.

Qatar Airways has already added a new destination this year (Riyadh) and 3 more will follow (Casablanca, Milan and Frankfurt) Qatar Airways also increased frequecnies and capacity accross the network and has taken an additional A300. The airline will also take delivery of 2 additional A320s and 2 A330s this year.

About European expansion plans, DOH - LHR will go to 11x weekly in June and the airline wants to add 3 more flights to make the flight 2x daily as soon as slots are awarded. Qatar Airways also want to increase both MUC and FRA to a flight daily each from 3x weekly and 4x weekly respectivley. QR will also anounce 2 new European destinations soon.

Qatar Airways will also enter into more codeshare agreements soon and expand thier existing ones (Lufthansa and Malaysia).

Qatar Airways will recieve its first A330-200 in a few days (7th of May 2002). The aircraft will have a major cabin overhaul with details available in this thread http://www.airliners.net/discussions/general_aviation/read.main/786899/.

The first two A330-200s will be dedicated to London Heathrow and then Asia (KUL/CGL/BKK/MNL) will be the next in line to recieve the A330-200s

Watch out for more news soon!

I guess New York will be JFK, not EWR? Canada sounds interesting, probably YYZ first on the list.

You never know, look at MAS they opted for EWR instead of JFK . I also think they will go with JFK but they could always go for EWR instead.

Other destinations in the U.S.? Is DTW one of them? It would make sense since Detroit area has the largest Arabic population in the U.S.

DTW probably won't see Qatar flights any soon. I would think if there was a link between DTW and the middle east, i suspect Emirates will be carrier to start flights to detroit once EK inaugurates US flights.

I can't imagine their being enough traffic to support it--connecting or otherwise.
Particularly now, when Americans are avoiding practically anything Arab (or Israeli for that matter). And no, I don't agree...

Greg:

Plenty of connecting traffic from the Indian subcontinent - there are never enough flights to and from India. Plus, tourist traffic to and from SE Asia connecting in Doha.

I don't think DTW is on the list of cities they plan to serve. It sure has a huge Arabic population but many of these arabs are from a low income bracket and so the yeilds on these trips are will be terrible. Another
issue is that most of these arabs are from Lebanon and the surrounding countries and Qatar overshoots Lebanon by more than 3 hours so the pax heading for Lebanon will have a significantly longer flight on QR than if they use a European carrier and connect in Europe.

For other destinations in the US, I think Qatar Airways is considering IAH because of the Oil and Gas industry.

KL173

And which new European destinations will be announced?? any idea at the moment??.......

I am still awaiting an anouncement but nothing yet. They probably will be Manchester and Zurich. But they could also be Amsterdam, Vienna or Copenhagen.

Greg

I was sceptical at first of QR's and EK's plans to the North America but not anymore. There is huge potential wether it is direct or connecting traffic.
Many of British Airways' and KLM's passengers from DOH connect onwards to the US with BA and KL. The same thing happens with QR's flights to Europe. You said that Americans are avoiding anything Arab. Well thats not entirely true, the number of Americans either living/working in Qatar or visiting Qatar as tourists has rised significantly this year. Sure Sep. 11 did affect the amount of American TOURISTS visiting Qatar but the inflow of American workers still continues. The terrorist attacks only affected approximatley 5-10% of the bookings to Europe/US initially after the attacks but the situation recovered quickly.

Jaysit

Plenty of connecting traffic from the Indian subcontinent - there are never enough flights to and from India. Plus, tourist traffic to and from SE Asia connecting in Doha.

You are correct, Qatar Airways will capitalise on the Traffic between the Sub-Continent and the US. Also US East Coast to South-East Asia is closer through the Atlantic than through the Pacific.

MHz

Qatar Airways only codeshare with MH on the DOH-KUL flight but QR has an agreement (not codeshare) to carry QR's passengers heading to Penang, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia etc. Also Qatar Airways Holidays (QR's tour operator branch) uses MH on flights to the above mentioned destinations.

Dennys

I am sorry, other than what was mentioned earlier no new information has come out.

Donder10

What you said is correct. The O&D out of DOH will be high yeilding but Qatar Airways needs to be very careful and manage the yeilds properly of the connecting passengers from Asia.

Regards,
Qatar

I think they would choose EWR since there's more connecting traffic, especially to CO's other hub Houston which is probably on their list too.

Is it possible for ORD/IAD/JFK(EWR)/YYZ to be on the first round of new destination for N. America flight?

If Qatar is leaning towards Star, it would makes sense for Qatar to fly Star Alliance hub.
