A few of them, too:

1) Why does the 747 have the outter main gear, (under the wings), hang down so much, they are nearly vertical. I would think this would make it harder for them to be stable, but obviously not.

2) Why does the A340 have a centered landing gear that's behind the two others, I would think it hitting the runway first would cause a lot of pressure to sit on it and cause some stress.

3) Will any airplane ever have more than two front wheels besides the Myria 225?

1.
The bogies on the wing landing gear hang down to create a softer landing.

2.
When the gear is fully extended on an A340, the centre landing gear does not hang down as far as the wing gear. In fact if an A340 is very light the CLG won't even be touching the ground ! Its only purpose is to distribute the a/c weight when the a/c is fully loaded

Three intelligent, thoughtful questions answered by two people who know their stuff and gave three informed and accurate responses. It warms my heart.

Wow, it never occured to me that the gear didn't extend to the same lengths, and that makes sence about the 'bogies' (I didn't know they were called that!). Hmmm... is right, I've rarely been able to get such concise and immediate answers. Because so often the world is not a pleasent place, I feel I must offer both of you answerers and Hmmm... for his compliments many many thanks.
