The bogies on the wing landing gear hang down to create a softer landing.
When the gear is fully extended on an A340, the centre landing gear does not hang down as far as the wing gear. In fact if an A340 is very light the CLG won't even be touching the ground ! Its only purpose is to distribute the a/c weight when the a/c is fully loaded

Wow, it never occured to me that the gear didn't extend to the same lengths, and that makes sence about the 'bogies' (I didn't know they were called that!). Hmmm... is right, I've rarely been able to get such concise and immediate answers. Because so often the world is not a pleasent place, I feel I must offer both of you answerers and Hmmm... for his compliments many many thanks.
