According to a Malaysian press, Malaysia Airlines (MAS) is set to receive its first B777-300ER in the next 3 months? Am I seeing things? First of all, I thought the B773ER is not even out yet and second of all, MAS only operates the B772ER and had converted all the B773 orders to the B772? Is this somesort of things that the press get confused about? Does anybody out there can tell me if MAS have ordered any B773 at all that is due for dlivery within the next 3 months? Thank you in advance.

The article seems to be quite sure that it is in fact a Boeing 777-300ER. It is quite strange as MAS has not in the past expressed much interest in this aircraft and I can't really see it fitting into its network.
MAS had originally expressed its intentions in being a launch customer for the 777-200X or LR version to inaugurate nonstop KL-LAX services. Boeing's site states that the 777-300ER is only due to enter flight tests in 2003 whilst the 200LR is still being studied if at all viable.
Perhaps this is Malaysian press spinning another 'feel good' story for Malaysia Airlines....???

They are getting another 777-2H6 ER this month but have no 777-300 ER on order yet. First 777-300 ER will be delivered late next year or early 2004 to Japan Airlines and certainly not next month to Malaysia Airlines. The777Man
Need a Boeing 777 Firing Order....Further to fly....GA, T5, CI and LX 777s

I thought that I had read that Malaysian had decided to lease one or two 777-300's for the runs to Australia. Maybe I am wrong but I swear that I saw that on one of the airliner news sites last year.

MAS did initially wanted to be the launch customer for the new B772-LR, but due to the economic crisis, this was obviously put on hold. There weren't anymore new orders for aircraft after the 1996 orders. I think if MAS were to order new planes, it would have to be regional planes or those B737-NGs or the Airbus A320s family to replace their current regional fleet. Maybe a replacement for their DHC-6 Twin Otter. Embraer is eyeing MAS for their regional fleet update.
I think if the B773 were actually ordered, they could probably go into routes like to Sydney/Melbourne (morning flight departure from Malaysia), Shanghai, Brisbane/Auckland etc. But I don't think they order it and MAS did not even announce the order neither they have the B773 in the schedules. It's cool to see those long bastards in MAS colors though!
Airbus Lover: If the media was mistaken, then they shouldn't say something like first B777. MAS already have 14 or 15 I think of the B777 and it won't be a first.

OK Folks,
Searching for more answers but here's a quote from a Boeing web site.
"Later in the year, Japan Airlines placed an order for five 777-300s and Malaysia Airlines soon followed in January 1996. The first 777-300 was delivered to Cathay Pacific Airways in June 1998."
I think that Malaysia may have been delaying the order for year (like Northwest Airlines has done with their Airbus A330 order). Obviously, this order was NOT for the "ER" variant but it is for the -300.

MAS did initially ordered 4 B773 back in 1996 when they order 15 B777 and 10 B744s. But when the economy crisis struck, I believe those B773 orders where chaged to B772ERs instead. There had been no news reagrading MAS taking deliver of the B773 as on their order book with Boeing still shows 15 B772ERs. If I am not mistaken, they have already taken delivery of 13 B772, with another 4 more to go I think. (2 of the B772 are leased from SALE).
