Qatar has raised the quantum of finance for its airport development project from $600 million to $1 billion, Qatar Airways' chief executive Akbar Al Baker said.

Work on the new international airport project, to be located to the east of the present site, is to begin by the fourth quarter of this year, and is slated to be completed by mid-2006, in time for the Asian Games that Qatar will be hosting later that year, Al Baker said at the ATM.

The initial estimate for the cost of the project for the Qatar Department of Civil Aviation has been revised because of additions in facilities to the original plan, he said.

"Upon discussions with our consultants, we have decided to have additional facilities in the terminal building, and a 40 per cent increase in contact gates, which has taken the project cost to an estimated $1 billion," said Al Baker.

The airline took over the handling of Doha International Airport in February last year, with a mandate to run it as a "profit centre" for the state, he said.

He said that he had given top priority to the development of the airport into one of the most important airports in the region, the Khaleej Times reported.

Meanwhile, the existing airport is being refurbished. A facelift for the departures building being completed in September, renovation work is now being undertaken on the arrivals terminal within a timeframe of six months and a budget of $20 million.

When completed, the arrivals terminal will wear a modern look with new furnishings and facilities. As part of the plan to make the airport user-friendly, the parking facility at the airport will be expanded to accommodate 2,000 cars.

The airline is aiming for 2.45 million passengers by the close of fiscal 2002-2003, which is a "conservative" growth estimate of 40 per cent, said Al Baker.

He was speaking at the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai before heading for the Airbus Industrie's headquarters in Toulouse, France, to take delivery of a new A330-200 aircraft, the first in a firm order of eight. The second A330 is to arrive in Doha on July 19.

With the new additions, Qatar Airways' fleet will go up from 14 aircraft now in service to 30 aircraft in three years, and by 2007, the airline will have 34 aircraft.

The airline has two firm orders and two options on the superjumbo Airbus A380 double decker aircraft.

Al Baker said that in the not-too-distant-future the airline's board "will be able to confirm the two options".

He said the airline would promote tourism as it played a key role in a country's economic development. The airline will add four new destinations to its network from its Doha hub in the next six weeks, with Casablanca on May 31, Frankfurt on June 13, Milan on June 16 and Sanaa on June 24.

What is Intereseting is that they are going to be building a larger new airport than what was originally planned. I have heard this is because several Asian and European carriers have applied to serve DOH and so they need to account in for more growth.

Another interesting thing is that they are going to order more aircraft than what was originally planned.

I am also happy to see QR growing so fast.
