I think this is also an opportunity for the Boeing engineers to flex their designing muscle. Many had left the company because they felt they were only doing redesigns of existing models, while other companies were doing new designs.
Someday, we'll look back at this, laugh nervously, and then change the subject.

We spoke about this topic a few days ago here......it is time for Boeing to look at replacing the 757/767, or offer next-generation models of each in my opinion. This is a hugely important market for Boeing, as Airbus does have a void in its line-up in the 200/250 seat category at the moment (A300 is old-tech, and there is a major gap between the A321-200 and A330-200) and Boeing cannot afford to let this market slip away.
The 757/767 has been a huge success, but the 764's lack of popularity when compared to the A332 is a sign that something new and improved is needed.

Imagine a reduced size 777 and that might be the plane we're talking about. It might essentially be a plane that uses the current 767 fuselage but with a new nose, new tail assembly, and lower-drag wings so the plane can cruise faster (at least the same as the 777 on long-range cruise) and fly further.
Given the large number of 767's in service I don't think there's pressing need for Boeing to include side-by-side LD3 container compatibility.

Mostly because of center-of-gravity and T-tail aerodynamic issues for such a big plane with your suggested design.
My suggestion of using the 767 fuselage with new nose, new tail and new wings with new engines is probably what I think Boeing is working on. Given all those changes I wouldn't be surprised it'll be called the 787 when it's finally revealed.

Im sure airbus is fully aware of the massive gap between the A321 and the A330, and they too must be thinking hard and worrying what to do, thay have a lot of projects on teh go and maybe they dont have the resources at the moment, but im sure they wont let boeing get 1 over them in this market. The demand is massive, the A300/A310/762 were very popular, and a replacemenet from both manufacturers could be likely, i think.

I think we can all agree that Boeing needs to be far more aggresive in its new product development. While the originals are pretty good, you can get only so far with derivatives.
I wonder if Boeing would still offer its medium-sized jet with two fuselage cross-sections. A new wider narrow-body and a revised smaller wide-body. I am not sure if they could successfully make a widebody replacement for the 757.

I guess I'd probably agree here. Frankly, after doing alot of SFO/SJC-JFK trips, I've found the 767 to be a spectacular airplane for the passeneger, even in cattle class. The versatility of the plane is awesome too, it can fly long distances, have a 2-class set up, or a 3-class set up. Its a good plane for reaching smaller cities in Europe from the US, and if traffic increases like some people say it will, it may be very useful for more medium range routes like ORD-MIA etc.

Airbus is aware of the gap between the A321 and the A330-200 thats why they came up with the model called the A330-100 it was to replace the ageing fleet of A310's. I believe the plan was scrapped, then again this was before 9/11. who knows it might be in talks again.

I think that Boeing is talking about a totally new airliner here, of course using a part or two from the existing lineup, for the 200/250 seat market. A 777-100 would be too big and heavy to replace the 767 line, although one could say that a 777-100 may have been a better alternative than the 767-400, but that is in the past.
I am betting that the new airliner will be a wide-body, 8 abreast for coach with side-by-side capacity for LD3s in its belly, so that limitation of the 767 series can be put to rest. Likely in 2 lengths, one in the 225 seat category and one in the 275 seat category (smaller is really not necessary, the 739 can take over many missions from the 757), each with 2 range options: medium (3,500 miles - 757 range) and long (6,500 miles - 767ER range);maybe an ultra long-range version(8,000 nm) will follow depending on the Sonic Cruiser.
