In it Professor David Begg says, "The south-east of England is the most congested airspace in the world. We need to develop an airport for northern Britain. And that airport is Manchester.The government have got to look at this very closely."

All I can say is, "Are you listening British Airways?".

MAN has more than enough capacity to accommodate a substantial increase in daily a/c movements. The job now is convincing the airlines that routes to MAN are viable and there is enough demand in the region.

I think the problem with MAN is that they do not generate enough premium traffic, most of them are leisure market. Take MAS for example, their Economy Class to Manchester are pretty full, but when it comes to premium cabin, it's not really filled up! Where as in London, all the cabins are filled up! But one thing though, Manchester airport lacks of passenger is probably due to the fact that there are not that many connections compared to London, which is still the preferd choice for air travelers.

to who? I suspect BA know more about the economics of running an airline than Prof Begg or members of the Government. And of course, this is what it boils down to. Airlines like BA are operating in a free market and if they thought there was money to be made at MAN, they'd be there like a shot and to assume their lack of medium / long-haul services is due to some parochial bias towards London is frankly nonsense. They like London, and LHR in particular, because they make money out of there. Given half the chance, bmi would be shifting their transatlantic ops there as well.

Therefore, whilst I'm sure Prof Begg's sentiments are shared by many of us, the reality is that many airlines are naturally drawn to the market dynamics of London and LHR, and these dynamics are not replicated at MAN or anywhere else in the UK
