Bahrain airport in for major expansion

Monday, May 13, 2002
The Bahrain Department of Civil Aviation is to showcase its $700 million Bahrain International Airport (BIA) expansion programme at the Airport Build and Supply Exhibition - the airport development exhibition - which will takes place at the Airport Expo, Dubai from June 3 to 5.

In the spotlight will be plans for BIA's new control tower; taxiway upgrade to emergency runway status; main runway resurfacing; passenger terminal expansion (which includes satellite expansion, additional airbridges and expanded passenger handling facilities); additional aircraft parking stands; multi-storey car park and shopping mall; logistics park; corporate aircraft hangars and cargo terminal expansion.

"Leading the Bahrain DCA team will be director of engineering and maintenance, Dheya Towfiqi, who will be using the exhibition as an opportunity to hold preliminary discussions with potential contractors and to raise the profile of Bahrain International Airport," said David Ryan of Bahrain Department of Civil Aviation.

More than $200 million has already been pumped into the BIA upgrade since 1994 with about another $500 million earmarked for the next five years. One of the next projects to be finished will be an airport hotel, due for completion at the end of 2002, and to be operated by Movenpick.

"With the high level of international airport build and supply exhibitors at the show, we have an opportunity to reach industry specific decision movers and shakers from an international profile," said Ryan.

Held under the patronage of Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation and Chairman of Emirates airline, the exhibition is attracting leading companies from the airport build and supply industry with products ranging from X-ray security systems, airfield lighting and passenger boarding bridges to transponder loading systems and voice communication equipment.

Other projects under the microscope will include regional development plans ranging from Dubai International Airport to other emirates of the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Egypt, and Yemen.
