Alitalia Posts US$20 Million Q1 Loss

Alitalia reported an operating loss of US$20 million for Q1 compared to a loss of $111 million last Q1.

Alitalia sacked 900 people out of it's 24 000 workforce after the September 11 2001 terrorist attacks which helped the revenues which came in at $1 billion, down 11%.

Alitalia will raise $1.3 billion in a rights issue which means that the Italian state will increase it's stake in Alitalia to 61%.

Since the first Q uses to be the wrost of the year for AZ (40% of the renvenue come from the Q2), some analyst predict a Q2 with profit.

It seems the new business plan starts to work very well.

Airblue, I agree with you, considering AZ's state over the last few years, $20M loss is not that bad. Hopefully, they'll make a Q2 profit and turn the ship around.

When did they implement the new business plan? November right?

Yes, it was November.

I think post only $20M loss (- 82% compared to $111M loss of 2001 Q1) it's really a good result for Alitalia.

It seems MXP hub start to work cause they improve the capacity on some domestic routes that are used maily for connection pax. like Ancona, Bologna and Trieste. They also resume MXP- Rimini.

From their official summer timetable it seems the new 5 A319s will fly untill October 2002 mainly on domestic routes from/to Rome FCO and Palermo, Pisa, Cagliari and Bari.

Great to hear! I hope AZ gets back on a great track and becomes the World Class Airline they are!

The A319's look cute! Im dying to see the 777's, and as always, wish AZ was still getting 744's! I'm gonna miss the sight of the AZ 747's....

yes service was improved.

The route who tested the new onboard domestic service is the LIN-FCO.
With the new summer timetable AZ offers 62 daily flights between LIN and FCO. The flights are operated under the mark Alitalia LINK with a mix of A321/MD-82 and in spite of the only drink service, now they also offer sandwich, ice cream, biscuits and some other amenities. The next route who will get the AZ LINK service will be the FCO-Turin.

Today Jean-Cyril Spinetta (the Air France CEO) was elected member of the AZ board.

Did AF buy some AZ stock? I supposed Spinetta would enter AZ board only when AF would have bought AZ stock? Can anyone confirm or deny it?
