So yesterday UA had another problem with their computers and gave a whole lot of fares away for as low as $5. Anyone know what routes people booked? And yes, United is going to honor them.

ALL the US fares were between 5 and 45$, and that's including tax! The glitch was between 11am and somewhere around 3pm, that's when I heard about it. Too late.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the $5.00 fare destinations were to San Francisco, Los Angeles and "a dozen other destinations." All flights originate from ORD, since the glitch was a result of tweaking United's computers to start advertising low fares from Chicago to rebuild traffic.

According to the Trib, this has also happened a couple of other times this year where passengers got a chance to book tickets to Paris, London and Hong Kong for $24.98. They apperntly sold 143 of those tickets. And those were honored too.

And also in August it happened again when 120 customers booked trips to Bombay from Chicago for $140 or $180. Again, those were honored as well. Wow, this would have been quite a mileage run.  Big thumbs up

As a frequent ual.com visitor myself, I sure would have loved the chance to have ogtten a hold of one of those super discounted tickets? If I did, do you think they would have let me upgrade to Biz? Big grin

Well the duplicate post said the UA was trying to offer $5.00 off on the fares. That would surely draw people in.
I frankly wonder if it was a glitch. Think how many people are going to go to the UA website hoping to find such a deal. I think they won't but one never knows. I tend to believe it was a rather astute bit of marketing. They got publicity at a very low price by selling empty seats. Stroke of genius.

I am glad I was around to fly before de-regulation.

No, this was not intentional. In fact here is an article explaining the glitch and what possibly could have caused it ...

Window of blame opens on $5 United tickets
A few industry experts are suggesting that the Internet ticketing problem experienced by United Airlines on Tuesday may be tied to a problem with the carrier's computers--rather than the Airline Tariff Publishing Co..

Airline Tariff Publishing of Herndon, Va., was created in the 1960s to independently handle the transmission of fare information to travel agents and reservations systems.

The company now also transmits the data to a variety of booking sites, including that of United.com., because of federal regulations.

"We got the information [on United fares] correctly from ATPCO into our system," said a techie who helps run a competing Internet booking engine.

United officials have said the error was caused by the publishing company.

It is the third time in a little more than a year that United has inadvertently allowed customers to buy heavily discounted tickets. On Tuesday, nearly 1,000 round-trip tickets were sold for $5, plus various government taxes, during about 51 minutes over the lunch hour, said Rono Dutta, United's president.
