Virgin Atlantic's Current 747 Fleet Questions.

I was wondering what the status was of Virgin Atlantic's current 747-200 and 747-400 fleet. I know that they have sold or leased off all of their "Classics" but the "Classics" seem to be coming back into the fleet via Air Atlanta. Can anyone clarify the situation?

Some of the classics were sold to 'Kabo' ?? whoever they are.....some went to Kemble and were broken up. Air Atlanta have taken a couple of them to operate the Man-Mco and also will be using them in Jul/Aug to operate the Lhr-Los flights. The a/c that Air Atlanta have taken are still in VS colours and still the same inside as when VS owned them, only thing that has changed is the reg. and they are now flown by Air Atlanta f/deck crew (which really p!$$ed off the VS classic crews who were made redundant), but still have VS cabin staff, and the rest are out in the desert.

As for the 744's, still going strongly, with the 4 (AZ) a/c based at LGW and the rest at LHR, tho they have now replaced the A340 on most of the transatlantic routes for the summer season.

This was definately what I was after. I knew about the 747-200s which were Pratt powered, but the RR aircraft continued to be a mystery. One note though is that VS took delivery of 5 ex AZ ordered 747-400 and 2 of their own 747-400s within the last year. That means that they currently operate 13 747-400s overall.

Are you saying that there will be no VS A340's to the US over the summer period?

That is definately an interesting question. VS 17 and 18 though continue to be operated by A340-300s. I think that LHR-LAX's second daily flight is also operated by the A340.

It's pretty much how CX747 has said, the VS023 and VS017 are operated on A340's and the rest are on B744's, but sometimes the VS009 operates on A340.
They swap the destinations between the summer and winter periods for capacity, i.e. The 747's did the HKG/JNB routes over the winter (busy time for those routes) and the DEL/LOS routes were operated on the 742's until they went, now they are A340 routes, which means that we don't have as many A340's free to operate the transatlantic routes.

Basically if you want to see VS 744's departing go to LHR before 1430, if you want to see the A340's departing, go after 1430.

This will probably all change later in the year when we get the A346's. (end of July now I heard the othe day - due to further setbacks).

CX - I only thought we got one of our own (G-VWOW)....I'm probably wrong tho.....

I must apologize Leezyjet, Virgin has yet to receive G-VROC although I have learned that they were supposed to receive the aircraft in December of 2001. They have deferred delivery of this aircraft though and it has gone to another customer. Their 747-400 will arrive sometime in 2003.

Kabo Air is a Nigerian airline-I think they got LAX and JFK.
