I love Ch. 9! I fly out of my way sometimes to use it as well! Anyway, yes, it is great. BUT, be aware that it is the captain's choice to turn it on, and he may refuse. But, most do. And, if it is not on at the beginning of the flight, just go up to the cockpit and ask, they like hearing from enthusiasts. Also, Ch. 9 is low on the list of things needing to be fixed by the mechs, so it is rare, but sometimes it is broken. Have a good trip!

Err, no offense IbizaJet A330, but I wouldn't actually recommend 'just going up' to the cockpit mid-flight nowadays, poor Dr DTW could find himself being wrestled to the ground by an Air Marshall and sat on by a portly 1K while being zapped by the Captains' Tazer gun and receiving a swift kick in the nuts by the Flight Attendant... and being dragged off by the FBI after an emergency landing in DCA!! "But honestly Officer, I just wanted to ask for channel 9!!"" Yeah , right... and remember you must remain seated for the first and last 30min of each flight into and out of DCA, per the FAA... Dont do it DR DTW!!! he he!!! Have a good flight!!

If it's not on you can always ask one of the Flight Attendants who can ask the Captain to turn it on. But as mentioned, it is at the Captain's discretion.
Its better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than be in the air wishing you were on the ground. Fly safe!

Ch. 9 was forbidden on flights to and from DCA after 9/11. Recently on a flight to DCA, not only was Ch. 9 available again, but the Capt. also mentioned it several times.

United does not own express, so no ATC on commuter aircraft.
I love Channel 9. I usually bring my own headset and plug it in right away. Sometimes you can hear communication between the pilots and ground staff before departure.

Someone had mentioned that Ch. 9 was banned after 9/11 on flights to/from DCA. Is this still in effect??
Same answers apply as before. It's all Captain's discretion.

As always, United never charges anyone for use of the United Airlines personal headphones which are found in the seat pocket infront of you. This is true to movie flights as well. Out of courtesy please repocket the headphones for the next customer.
United is the only domestic airline to offer free entertainment on all flights worldwide including channel 9.

Channel 9 can be offered on transatlantic flights. I flew SFO-LHR on UA954 and I had it pretty much all the way. I requested it before the flight and the captain told me that he might switch to music over the Atlantic. Sure enough, he turned it off for a little bit, but once we entered UK airspace, I had the flight attendant call him to change it again! On the return UA961, CDG-SFO, the channel 9 feature was broken... Hope this doesn't happen to you!
