"The U.S. government has alerted airlines and law enforcement agencies that new intelligence indicates that Islamic terrorists have smuggled shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles into the United States"

Someday, we'll look back at this, laugh nervously, and then change the subject.

In 1974, intelligence reports suggested that terrorists had smuggled SA-7's into Europe, security was beefed-up, including occasional troop deployments around airports such as LHR.
Years ago, I read a novel, (published in 1977), called 'SAM-7', where Arab terrorists used an SA-7 against a DC-10 on finals to LHR, firing from the top of a tower block, the aircraft crashing in central London.
The IRA tried for a long time to get SA-7's, and came very close to getting the US equivalent missile, Redeye. (From their many supporters in the US).
Finally, it appeared the Libya gave the IRA some SA-7's in the mid-1980's, as they were unlikely to use them against civil airliners, British military helicopters in N.I. and transport aircraft were fitted with countermeasures, as were V.I.P. aircraft generally.
If Al-Queda smuggled, and used, a US supplied Stinger missile against an airliner, imagine the political ramifications, a US weapon supplied to extreme fundamentalists by the Reagan administration, used against a US civil airliner. (Stinger is by far the most effective of these class of IR-guided, shoulder-launched missiles).
Thanks to Reagan and Oliver North, similar weapons supplied to Iran, (to get US hostages out of Lebanon), were used in the 'tanker war' in the Persian Gulf in 1987-88, one shot down a US Marine AH-1 attack helicopter, And North an ex-Marine too!
What countermeasures to take? The large areas around take off and approach paths that would have to be secured, and the number of airports in the US, would make for a security nightmare.
Taking all this into consideration, you'd think the Bush administration, being so nostalgic for the Reagan years, (tough old Ronnie? Terrorist appeaser more like) would keep quiet about this.
Unfortunately, this sort of idea has probably been an Al-Queda, and other terrorists goal for many years.

What type of heights is the stinger effective upto?I remeber reading on the net, albeit probabrly not factually true, that Al-Queda had tried shooting down airliners on the flight path out of EWR+JFK towards the Atlantic.

Whatever, the Washington Times is owned by some half-baked nutty Korean cult.

Hardly a reputable source.

The Stinger (FIM-92A) is believed to be effective in altitudes of up to 10,000'. The SA-7, SA-14, SA-16 and SA-18 are all believed to be capable of at least that, with the SA-14 having an estimated effective ceiling of up to 20,000'.

This is a load of cra* !!

Can't people see they (US Gov) are just trying to get people to stand by them by making all these stories.

Maybe the US of A can explain to their people how shoulder fired missles get into the country in the first place ??

Aren't all El Al aircraft equipped with " counter-measures" against missiles?

I remember years ago when watching takeoffs from LAX ( from the beach at the end of the runways) I would see Israeli security ( Israeli, not Argenbright!)monitoring the beach ( and the spotters parked on the roads under the flightpath).

After the El Al flight took off so did the security people.

It would be nice if precautions were taken before something happens but that's not how things work.

And GDB, you are right. Most of the SAM missiles that are in the "wrong" hands now were put there by the US Govt.

Well, considering that the article states:

"We don't have information that al Qaeda is planning to use these against commercial aircraft in the United States," an FBI official said. "However, we are passing the information along for people to remain alert to the potential use."

Then why did the FBI offer the information for the media to report?

HKGspotter....keep your own bullsh*t to yourself. You'd be the same one, had a missle attack happened, screaming about the idiotic American government not warning its citizens.

Also, the information has been released for law enforcement use, and less than scrupulous journalists (rare breed, I know) decide to blast the info across headlines. It is going to get to a point where, when a real warning is issued for public use, nobody is going to pay attention to it.

Oh, and to answer your question HKGSpotter, it may have been smuggled through one of the 2 longest borders in the world, or along one of the two longest coastlines in the world. Maybe it was shipped through one of the various shipments, full of smuggled, illegal goods, from China via Hong Kong.
