Isn't this illegal? In December, the MetroJET 737-200 I was to fly from PBI (Palm Beach)-BWI (Baltimore) was leaking oil (while we were onboard). It was hot, so the captain said we could sit in the boarding area. They left the door open, so anyone could walk in and out of the plane!

Well, it's either that or get hit with a class-action lawsuit like Northwest got when they didn't let people off the aircraft.

Although it may seem weird the security at the gate is to prevent freeloaders. It is more revenue related as all security checks have been done. The flight crew is on board to resrict access to the ramp and critical areas of the airplane. One must not confuse company policy with regulations.
