The inevitable was announced recently. JAT will start selling its older fleet component of Boeing 727-200s and McDonnell Douglas DC9s. For a start the company plans on selling six B727s and three DC9s. Many of these older aircraft were regarded as surplus in the fleet to begin with.

For now JAT will continue to operate two B727s in its operational fleet, consisting of the YU-AKI and YU-AKK. These two aircraft were delivered in 1980 and 1981 respectively. The airline plans to continue operations with six hush-kitted DC9s, two of which are in its operational fleet consisting of the YU-AJJ and YU-AJL. The remaining four DC9s will not be sold yet, as they are on long term lease contracts abroad.

With the reduction, this will bring the total fleet to 21 aircraft. I would also expect that as leasing contracts are concluded from abroad, JAT is bound to sell the other four DC9s as well.

From what i can see, the future revision of orders from Airbus is starting to become more predictable. Instead of the eight A319s, which was discussed on earlier posts, the airline would be better suited with a wider range of planes from the A320 family, and with the addition of two wide-body aircraft. The A320 family is very likely to be composed of A320s and A318s, while the Boeing 737-300s and ATR72s will remain in the fleet for some time to come.
