Please find enclosed Press Release:

SriLankan Airlines confirms that it plans to resume services to Germany this winter.

The airline will re-commence services to Frankfurt via Paris four times a week, in late October, the start of the winter season, subject to suitable landing slots being obtained at Frankfurt.

Says SriLankan’s CEO Peter Hill: “As part of the airline’s continued review of its operating programme, we have undertaken a study of the opportunities in the German market since the events of September 11 last year. With the peace initiatives undertaken by the government of Sri Lanka, our projections are that the development of both leisure and business traffic from Germany is set to grow significantly in the future.

“Our recent discussions with tour operators in Germany confirm this optimism. As has been well publicized, this view is shared by the local hoteliers and travel trade in Sri Lanka. We are also responding to concerns expressed by the government that direct air services are limited between Germany and Sri Lanka which in their opinion is hampering the development of tourism between the two countries.”

Details of the SriLankan’s schedule will be announced once the relevant airport slots have been obtained from French and German authorities.

If it really will happen then that is great news. Last saturday while I was in FRA I was thinking about them that I kinda miss that beautiful livery...
Are they maybe also interested in flying to Berlin again?

Nice to have them coming back.
Any plans of replacements for the 2 A330s and the A340 destroyed by terrorists last summer?

I don't think that BER is a question at the moment. UL was looking to open FRA and FCO both but because they don't have planes left they just put CDG and FRA together, I just wonder where they are going to reduce because CDG/FRA will get 4 flights, CDG has only 3 so far. I also think that the yield will go down on this flight and SriLankan Airlines has already an excellent load factor (around 85-86 % in March 02) and now they want to improve the Yield.

Na
Well, I would say there are plans to replace the 2 A330, the A340 and the A320 destroyed but its a question of money and right, SriLankan Airlines and Sri Lanka it self, they should invest more in Tourism when the peace talks in Bangkok with the Tamil Tigers will be a full success, so not only UL, also Sri Lanka it self could profit of tourism.

Hello,

SriLankan will indeed lease a fourth A340-300 to reopen flights to FRA, MXP and FCO.

Alain
where do you have this info from?

The Press release is only for FRA, not MXP and FCO because they really are looking for high yield and good loads, no wonder with a small fleet like that.

Sure it is, but I don't think that the company has the funds or the possibility to take another A340 into consideration at the moment.
But I see a reason why they should, in the interest of the company it self and in the Tourism for Sri Lanka...

I think it will be long while till we see SriLankan back in Australia.  Crying. Wish they were back, they had some damn cheap fares into SriLanka/India and the UK too. The 4th A340 will be inevitable, it will happen, just a matter of time, and BTW what happen with that investigation into the buying into of SriLankan by Emirates, by the current Govt. Things seemed to have gone quiet on that front.

I am also very keenly interested, on whether they are going to operate flights into Jaffna and maybe beyond, say into Chennai for example. I wonder what aircraft will they use.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I think SriLankan Airlines will look for high yield flights and as you said, I also doubt that they will fly into SYD very soon.
Right, things are quiet at the moment but as you see at least the situation with flights into Germany have changed. Another A340 would be great and beside the new flights into FRA and BLR there would be the possibility to fly somewhere else.

I think a CMB-Jaffna flight would be ok for the moment, I think they will operate it by a A320.

BTW: I heard that there is a new Airline called "Air Lanka Airways" or something like this, operating with Il18 from Colombo to Jaffna, this company has nothing to do with UL.
