Well, I picked up my copy of the Arizona Republic this morning, looked in the business section, and there was an article about Phoenix Deer Valley Airport (KDVT). In the article, it states that KDVT (the airport I train out of, by the way) is ranked 16th busiest in the nation in terms of takeoffs and landings. It is even ranked higher than SFO, JFK, and SEA! Now, this got me to wondering, how does the government track the number of takeoffs and landings into a general aviation airport such as Deer Valley? Is there a guy down at the airport just pushing a button every time a plane lands or what? Also, are touch and go's counted as part of the takeoffs and landings count? Because DVT sure gets alot of touch and gos.
Thanks for your help.

Deer Valley, no doubt, has a control tower. Control towers are equipped to log numbers of takeoffs and landings. Touch and go's are counted.

Ok, thanks for your response Tom. BTW, does anyone have the complete list of the busiest airports in the US in terms of takeoffs and landings?

I heard that ORD has a plane landing or taking off every 3 seconds. That's a lot. I also know that PWK (10 miles north of ORD) is the 3rd busiest airport in Illinois.

I was reading that ORD averages about 110 movements per hour. I just wonder how that's possible? ORD's runway configuration just seems too inefficent for that many movements. Could someone explain?

Also, DVT is the 2nd busiest in AZ I believe, behind Phoenix Sky Harbor International. DVT is also the 2nd busiest GA airport in the nation behind Van Nuys in CA. (according to the newspaper article)

Last I heard, 2nd busiest was Centennial here in Denver. Anybody have an up to date ranking of the busiest airports including GA ones?

I automatically thought of Centennial when I read that DVT was #2. I hope somebody has the list.

Do touch-and-gos count as one movement or two?

Thanks for that Nykaai. It does look like DVT is around 19th every day, and BTW, I meant ranked 19th in my original post, not 16th. Those 6's and 9's all look the same, lol.

I am surprized DVT is busier than Scottsdale where I train out of. I used to fly over at DVT and now that I fly out of SDL I found it to be more difficult to be able to get in a few touch and goes due to heavy traffic including all those beautiful Gulfstreams and Citation X's I encounter so often! I usually do my touch and goes over at Falcon Field or Chandler... those airports around the valley are great to get away from the rush of the northern airports! By the way beefmoney are you flying with Westwind out at DVT?

Beefmoney- I also fly out of Deer Valley (WSA)- we have more takeoffs and landings than Sky Harbor as well.

KaiTakFan- I used to fly out of Scottsdale, but transfered to Deer Valley- I remember when we were doing our run-up and a Citation X pulls up and does his runnup and was cleared before us- the whole plane shook- those things have pretty powerful engines!! M.92 cruising speed!

Ya, I fly over to Scottsdale every once in a while just to get a dose of business jet traffic. Most of the aircraft at DVT are Cessnas and Pipers while at Scottsdale you mix it up with Pilatus's, Gulfstreams, Learjets, Beechcrafts, its a good getaway from the small plane traffic.

I really need to read all of the other posts before replying. Yes Kai Tak, I rent out of Westwind, and apperantly so do a few others here on the forums and the chat. Its like a Westwind School of Aeronautics get-together here.

When I was visiting my local tower, the controller pushed a button (a small counter, similar to the ones they use at theme parks to count the number of people who enter a building) every time a plane lands.
