been trying to learn about action of AA and UA. so, another question about UA and AA.. its now MIAMI !!! i presume that AA is far bigger than UA in Miami... are UA's operation mostly domestic operations? and lastly, how is CO and DL operations there? thanxs for all help again.. hv a nice day

Yes, American is bigger than United and no, most of United's operations are international. Delta's operations in Miami, as in most of Florida, are quite successful. Delta uses planes like the 763, 764, 757, and MD-88. I'm not sure of any specifics on CO.

AA has roughly 268 daily flights (give or take a few depending on the day) from the Miami area, including Ft. Lauderdale (the FLL and MIA schedules are done as one so that the times rarely interfere; and FLL gets much more than DFW and ORD runs...BOS, LGA, LAX, SJU, RDU, NAS, and CCS). Service to about 80 cities, mostly international. Domestic network is weak, for the most part, and there is nothing unusual (except Vail, Colorado), but the international network to Latin America includes some unique destinations, many where AA is the only US carrier...La Paz, Santa Cruz, Maracaibo, Medellin, Cali, Asuncion, Santiago (DO), and Belo Horizonte.
United has a measly 19 daily flights to LAX, SFO, ORD, DEN, IAD, MCO, and JFK domesticly (EWR during the winter only) and EZE/MVD, GRU, GIG, SCL, and CCS internationally. Until this fall, Atlanta and Washington National were also served. The best part about it is the amount of widebodies. SFO and LAX get 777s, while JFK, ORD, and IAD get 767-300ERs, all in three-class international config. UA also has "scheduled" charter service to Havana de Cuba, 3x a week (777). Even though United has so few daily flights to Miami, fewer than other airlines including USAirways and Continental, they are #2 because of the heavy use of 767s and 777s.
Both United and American will be stepping up operations in the Miami area as both construct new, dedicated terminal facilities, UA's (15 gates) should open in 2005 and AA's (47 gates+commuter) in 2006. UA want's 25% of the market by 2010, they have about 6-7% right now.
Continental's operations out of Miami include mainline service to Newark, Cleveland, and Houston and Continental Connection service to Nassau, North Eleuthera, Freeport, Marsh Harbour, Sarasota, Tampa, Orlando, and Key West. The Ft. Lauderdale route network is identical, with the exception of Orlando. Continental Connection also has scheduled charter service to Havana and Cienfuegos; Continental mainline has scheduled charter service (it is even in thier downloadable timetable) to Havana, Cienfuegos, and Camaguey.
Delta's services out of Miami are mainline to Atlanta and Cinncinatti and Comair to Orlando and Tallahasse (before the fall, JFK was also served; in the more distant past Frankfurt, Dallas, and London Gatwick were served). Ft. Lauderdale sees the same services plus mainline to Tampa, LaGuardia and Dallas and Express to JFK, Newark, Islip, Boston, and Hartford (there is also a Delta Shuttle FLL-LGA run on Saturdays). MIA/FLL-SLC might come online this winter if rumours are true. Delta and thier SkyTeam partners will have exclusive residence of the recently built Concourse H, which is now being modified to handle international flights.

Does AA not serve Havana from MIA on a charter basis? It seems to me that this would be a logical route for AA given its large presence in MIA.
Also, when did UA start using 777s on the MIA-HAV route? I watched Miel Para Oshun at Sundance this year (though I am unsure when it was filmed) and I could have sworn that in the opening scene at Jose Marti, it is a UA 767 not a 777. Then again, maybe my memory is fading.
