Swiss sees oneworld membership in mid-2003
Dateline: Friday June 14, 2002

Swiss is around one year away from becoming a member of oneworld, President and CEO Andre Dose said yesterday in Washington, D.C.

Dose cited the need to conclude bilateral contracts with each oneworld member as well as the "slot issue" at London Heathrow as impediments to a faster entry into the global alliance. Nevertheless, he said that joining oneworld "is a cornerstone" of the airline's strategy. According to Dose, "50% of the global aviation market is dominated by the three major alliance systems"--Star, oneworld and SkyTeam. Swiss expects to file for US antitrust immunity for its partnership with American Airlines after the name change from Crossair to Swiss International Air Lines becomes official on July 1, he added.
In a broad corporate overview of the successor airline to Crossair and Swissair, Dose reiterated that swiss is well ahead of business projections that call for a loss of Sfr1.15 billion ($735.2 million) this year with a turnaround in 2003 and profits in 2004. Yield "is doing quite well," he said. Swiss expects to carry 9.8 million passengers in 2002, rising to 14.5 million in 2003 and 14.8 million in 2004.

Commenting on the decision to order the A340-300 to replace the airline's MD-11s, Dose cited a 5% DOC saving as well as commonality issues. He said the 777 is a bit too large for swiss and added that an important factor that weighed against it was the fact the in standard three-class configurations the 777 has a middle seat in business class. This is unpopular with swiss passengers, he said.

Great news. I can also see why they have ordered the A340 instead of the B777. What does always amaze me though, any comments please, is why do airlines say that "the B777 has a middle seat in Business class and our pax. do not like it". Its the airlines that install the middle seat. If they dont want it they dont have to have it. Mind you lots of space on the B777 with no middle seat but dont blame Boeing for it.

But if they don;t fit in the middle seats they wont be making money cos then they have to eat up more economy class space to put the same amount of biz class seats as with a middle seat config.

Since months, SWISS has been said to join Oneworld. It would definitely be the best alliance for them and SWISS would also add quite a few positive points to Oneworld, ZRH als Central European hub for exmple.

Some years back Swissair could also have joined Star in my opinion. But now, with Austrian Group and Lufthansa, the legal consequences (EU and cartel commission) would definitely be too heavy and of course, OS, LH and LX would definitely have to resize their European network. In this case, LH would be the leader, leaving the "junior partners" with the job to adopt their fleet and network.

Anyway, I don't believe, that SWISS joins Oneworld, before I have seen an official statement of Oneworld.

Yeah, I'm also waiting for an official statement since I think what Swiss does it just to keep it "updated" that the intend to join Oneworld.
They know that they have to do someting but its might just takes more time...

In the earlier post there where not more informations than in this one, the topic was that Oneworld COULD be a failure, when someone says it could be a failure, it could also be NO failure. Same goes for another topic I have seen where someone announced, that SK could/wants leave Star Alliance. Not more than a hoax...

I hope this really becomes true. In my opinion Oneworld is the best alliance for Swiss, by far. I think the biggest problems to solve, are the relation to BA and the slots at LHR. I don't really understand the slot problem at LHR with BA and LX. Why should it be a bigger problem than the slots at FRA with LH and OS (both Star, and the only airlines between VIE and FRA). I can not see any difference, the more there are other airlines serving ZRH-London (I admit, not to LHR but to LGW and LTN).

Why is BA always a problem... There are problems in its partnership with AA and with LX???? There is always something wrong with it... anticompetitive, too strong .... and LH is doing what it wants to : there is a monopoly on the D-US market between LH and UA and in Central Europe between LH OS NG and no one talk about that ... enough is enough

I think BA/AA/Oneworld actually used your case when American and British Airways tried to get US Antitrust. Last time I checked, Lufthansa and United have a stranglehold on the US-Germany and Central Europe markets and the reason British Airways serves so many US cities(for which Capitol Hill should be thankful for as if it weren't for BA, many of those cities would not see trans-atlantic flights) is because they have no US partner to feed to. To make things worse I think UA/BM received Anti-trust immunity. Another example is Delta/Air France, the two of them have a stranglehold on the US-France market. Take NW/KL, they probably have 90% of the market for US-NED flights and the government is totally blind to this. I couldn't agree more with you. You brought up a great point.

Regarding AA/LX, I think that alliance is actually expected to get anti-trust from the US government.

I think a lot has to do with AA, for whatever reason, the USA and Hong Kong do not have open skies and AA/CX have been pressing for an alliance for years and are just now expecting to get approval.

I'd say it's time for the US government to give AA and BA a break and make things fair. Also, I think that is the main reason Oneworld sort of lags behind. If SWISS joins Oneworld, this might ease things up a bit, and ZRH would become a great Central European hub and reliever for LHR(along with DUB/SNN with Aer Lingus)
