I just heard on the 2400 PST CBS news that a plane was hijacked at LHR. What are the details? Did everyone get off alright or are they still on it. I forget the airline but I believe it was coming from or to Afghanistan. I heard that the hijackers want an Afghani prisoner released. This sounds eerily familiar.
I don't know anything more. I would like facts, not speculation please folks. If you feel the uncontrollable need to speculate, please be kind and start your own discussion. Thanks.

Timobear, the last info I heard was that it was an Ariana (Afghanistan) Boeing which started out as a domestic flight. It was diverted to Kazakhstan, then Moscow, and now Stansted.

This is what happens when you make dealings with terrorists. It gives other terrorists hope that their scheme might yield similar fruit. It gives them incentive to try their luck. This coming right on the heels of the Indian Airlines successful coup of a hijacking where some of their political demands were met and they got off scot-free.
This underscores the importance of never giving an inch, no matter what the immediate cost. Short term satisfaction at having won the release of current hostages just imperils and kills future hostages. It's not worth it. And I don't want to hear the dumbass argument: "What if it was your loved one on that plane?" If it was my loved one on that plane, I would succumb to the emotional response too, which would be the wrong choice for everyone, especially for those relatives of loved ones yet to be hijacked.
Hijacking is a vicious circle. To save the passengers, you make a deal. But when you make a deal, you endanger the next batch of passengers. Vicious circles have to be broken. And you break them by firm and decisive action. And you only need to do it once to be immune for life.

They might have an easier case, especially if this is the case involving only one, Afgani ethnic group: how does hijaking of own citizens help any political group in their cause?
For the sake of argument, imagine humane society for ethical treatment of animals hijaking KLM aircraft full of pessangers demanding increase of respect toward small animals. Who would in right mind support such guys?
