NW 727 In BUF

To all:

I noticed that NW had 727 service to BUF this morning in place of the usual DC9. I thought NW had retired all of their 727's last year! Currently, BUF only sees 727 service from Delta(which incidently, are getting a bit tatty-where are the 738's?). United discontinued 727 service last year and has replaced it with a mix of 733/5's and A319's. FedEx still has regular 727 freight service
here, but an A300 would be nice if only for a bit of spotting variety.

NW had put in a bit of variety to BUF on weekends previously; occasional DC-10 or 757 service along with the rarer Avro RJ's (85's I believe),
but this is there first NW 727 I've seen in the 5 years I've lived in Clarence.

Still some surprises to be had on occasion; maybe an Airtran 717 or US A319 soon?

Best regards,

F4N

Come on down to ROC where you can see 5 Airtran 717's a day, 735's, 321's occasionally, and 2 daily Fedex 310's.

According to jp airline-fleets 2002/2003 edition, NW has still 30 727s in service.

Rock:

I am rather surprised at the number of different a/c types you see at ROC that don't make it here. I would have thought that with the recent renaissance of air travel that BUF is experiencing that we would see 717's, A320's, ect with the increased frequency of flights out of here. So it goes...
Admittedly, Southwest is getting a big part of that increase, but Airtran's service out of here seems very popular(and reasonable). I imagine that it is just a matter of time before the 717 gets here.

For US, BUF remains the domain of the 733/734, especially with the demise of the US MD80 and F100 fleets; fairly boring.

Ndebele:

Thank you for the info. Does NW still have any 40 or 50 series DC9's?

Best regards,

F4N

Nice that you got to see a Northwest 727, did you take a picture? Northwest has now less than 30 B727's left and the last one in mainline operations will be retired at the end of this year. There may still be a few NW 727's left early 2003 but that would be for sport teams charter flights only. The other airline that still has 727's is Delta. Does Delta still flies to BUF and ROC on the 727? TEDSKI told me that Delta no longer flies 727's into ALB. You're right about United, they no longer operate the 727.
Fly, if you can, Delta or Northwest on a 727 NOW before it's too late! If I lived in Altanta or Detroit, I would not hesitate to book a flight on the last 727 of Delta or Northwest whichever is based where I live.

Wow,a NW 727 in BUF. All we see in ROC is shorty DC-9's . At least we get Airtran 717's and Fed-Ex 727 and A310. The C5A should be coming this week for the airshow. We occasionally see DL 738's and MD88's along with a very rare US A321.

American 767:

FYI: Delta service to BUF is exclusively 727 service to ATL. Only rarely have I seen a Delta 732 or MD8x. I have not yet seen a Delta 738 here although I have flown 737NG on Continental, American and very recently, a brand new 73G on Southwest(BUF-PHX). I very much enjoy flights on these planes. I have to admit I no longer have alot of interest in flying on 727's. I have flown in these on American, United, Eastern,
Piedmont, Western, Delta, Allegheny & Republic amongst others since my first flight in a jet a/c (a Mohawk BAC111) in 1965(I think). Oddly, I have been on a 767 only twice (US 762's).

Yes, we still have the series 40 and 50 versions of the DC-9.

F4N- when is the last time NW flew a DC-10 into BUF? That is a sight I'd like to see!
Also, what type of aircraft does UPS use at BUF? Is it still a 757 or did they go bigger?

Zrb2:

As I mentioned earlier, NW seems to utilize different a/c for weekend service to BUF. I HAVE seen DC-10's and 757's, but they are infrequent visitors.
I have to admit that my work schedule includes weekends, so I don't always spot as consistently i as could. I am very surprised at how infrequently NW A320's appear in BUF. Perhaps the traffic doesn't warrant A320 service, but the fact that a 727 came in again today may bode well for the future. As an enthusiast, I like variety and have great interest in seeing an Airbus since they are (still) relatively rare here. I prefer to leave the parochial AvsB, us vs them type of arguments to those whose national psyches are fragile enough to need this sort of cyber reinforcement.

UPS service has been A306F as of late. I do not recall seeing the 757F for some time. Most interesting of all are the DC8's that UPS uses here; 4 holers
(except for KC-135's) are an absolute rarity in BUF. My son won a tour of the UPS cargo facility here as a school prize. He took some great pictures. If I can find them, I will post the best ones in a new thread.

It's 56 degrees here and raining; be happy you left the BUF weather behind...

Best regards,

F4N

321s in ROC? I just don't pay enough attention to what's approaching overhead anymore.

Interesting stuff F4N. Keep the BUF posts coming whenever you see something interesting up there. It seems there's many Rochester spotters on this board but very few Buffalo folks. I'm a native Buffalonian but I'm only up there maybe 2 -3 times a year now. I'm always interested to hear about the goings on at BUF!
