Is Anyone Hiring?

With the prospect of impending layoff, I have been sending my resumes out with great fervour. However, I am still not getting any replies, nor are my colleagues. What is going on is everybody in a hiring freeze? I have expected to at least get a few responses or call backs but nothing so far. I am even willing to go back to line maintenance if required but only with a good major.

With my talent level I have even applied for small regionals that fly our product (Dornier 328) but still nothing. I can however begin to call DOM's but I really do not want to work for the low paying regionals. Lets face it they pay less compared to the majors and not just a little less a lot less especially for supervision and management.

What am I doing wrong?

Problem with Jetblue is everywhere they want you to move to is so damn expensive. Oakland and New York, come on you would have to make wages they will never pay to survive.

Is it true that letters of reference by other mechanics or supervisors (aircraft maintenance) are very important at Southwest. At my former company Dee Howard they hired many of my best mechanics they all had letters of reference from other Southwest employees. I have lots of B737 experience and live in Texas, I would be all to happy to move to Dallas or Houston for Southwest. What are your thoughts 737Doctor? Can you help me out there?

TechRep, it definitely increases your chances of getting hired to have someone on the inside. I had a former co-worker write a letter of recommendation for me and I believe it helped me get a foot in the door. Once I got the interview though, it was all up to me. The People Department and the various MX managers take employee referrals with a fair amount of consideration; I guess they feel that our employees already know what kind of people we are looking for. On the flipside, I know of many guys that got hired without knowing anyone on the inside.

As far as me personally, I don't know if I would be much help. I have been trying for several months to help an old friend get an interview to no avail. Maybe he doesn't have the proper amount or type of experience.

We are opening a new hangar in DAL for our 1/4D-1/2D line sometime in July, and they have been bringing on new mechanics to man it, but I don't know if they have filled all the slots. I do know, however, that they schedule their interviews waaaaaay in advance.

If I can be of any more assistance, let me know.

Actually, you can find some pretty nice houses for cheap not too far from LGA, JFK, and EWR! So living in New York isn't as expensive as you think!!

I just got laid off myself, but I see this as an opportunity to switch careers and hopefully get into the aviation industry, which is where I've always wanted to be. Jet Blue is hiring for sure and I've applied for several positions there, but haven't heard anything back. It's still early.

As far as living in New York goes, it's not THAT expensive! Rent is probably more expensive, but everything else is as cheap, if not cheaper than the rest of the country. People get impression that it's such an unaffordable place to live, but they just think of Manhattan, which I must admit, is outrageous. The rest of the metro area isn’t that bad. If you know where to shop, this can be a bargain heaven.

Where can apply for ACA positions for LGA? I live five minutes away from the airport, so commute would be a breeze.

Have you tried Lockheed Martin? There ramping up for the JSF program and are in the process of hiring people for it. I'm sure they will need reps with experience dealing with customers.

I haven't applied with Southwest in ages. I went to the web site and applied for Chicago-IL, that was the only Line Maintenance position available. We will see what happens, I faxed it directly to them. I would defiantly relocate for that organisation.

Techrep,

FedEx is definitely hiring aircraft mechanics. They may not be listed through the website, but I know for a fact that we're hiring in Memphis, Oakland, LAX and Newark, probably IND as well as some other locations. ANC wouldn't surprise me either. You need to go to the ramp and talk to someone. Perhaps you did not search wide enough on the web site, but the web site does not include all the openings normally.

AirTran is hiring currently. If you're on the MX side of things...we currently have (I believe) seven maintenance bases: ATL, MCO, TPA, DFW, FLL, PHL, and BWI.

Delta, American, Alaska-- all hiring AMTs, and I've heard pretty reliable rumors that United will be hiring later on this year.

"What about flight positions? Anybody hires pilots now? "

It's kind of ironic that just a year ago, there was all this hoopla about an impending pilot shortage, and nothing about mechs, even though mechanics were needed even worse.
Now fast forward to today. Delta just brought in a new hire class of mechs on 6/14/02 and they're still planning to send pilots out the door. Makes you wonder what will happen in 2010, when the FAA estimates a sizable percentage of the US fleet will be grounded due to lack of maintanence personell.

One more thing, TechRep. I don't think you're doing anything "wrong". The hiring procedure is usually slow to get started up. I'm sure most airlines didn't think they'd be looking for folks this soon after 9/11.

Here at Deta, the guys responsible for mech hiring were quickly reassigned, one even returning to the line. Of course, they've now returned to HR.

The mechs most recently hired were for hard to fill line stations like LGA, but if you're interested, I can find out what stations have openings. I'm pretty sure I've seen hangar slots open in DFW and line slots here and there.

You can email me at cf680c2f@hotmail.com Good luck.
