Just a short note to let you know Air NZ's last 'Whisperjet' (BAe146) service operated last night.

Flight NZ5355 from Wellington to Christchurch landed at CHC at 1845 on the 16th June. The aircraft will now be returned to Melbourne for storage.

This was the aircraft that transported Queen Elizabeth II around the country during her recent visit to New Zealand, and first entered service with Ansett New Zealand in the late 1980s.

The registration ZK-NZN was first applied to an Air New Zealand DC10, which later became N144AA with American Airlines, having also passed through the hands of Malaysian Airlines System, Western Airlines, and Air Pacific in the interim.

Under the ZK-NZN registration with Ansett NZ's initial ownership, the aircraft has appeared in a variety of colourschemes, as you can see below!

The 146's had some of the friendliest, happy flight crews flying within New Zealand. Even though they knew they'd only have jobs for another couple of weeks they were still smiling and cheerful and were true ambassadors for Air NZ. Professionals all to the end.
On the last departure out of Dunedin the 146 did a low fly past of the runway before climbing and heading north, very impressive and a fitting finale to many years of reliable (almost always!) service within NZ.

Has Air NZ dropped the routes that the 146 operated - e.g Auckland - Dunedin direct, or have they been replaced by 737's?

733s and ATRs have replaced the 146 on their scheduled routes.
