What are the best times/days of the week to see jumbos arriving and departing Sky Harbor? I'm familiar with the daily BA 744, NW DC-10, and of course FedEX DC-10 and A300. However, widebody action seems a little thin most of the time. Recently, there was an article in the AZ Rep stating that some international airlines were looking at non-stop service to PHX, including Alitalia and KLM. Does anyone know the status of this?

Thanks,

JH

Hi JH. Are you in Phoenix? I'm originally from Mesa.

When the new Terminal 4 was opened a lot of work was being done to solicit international flights into Phoenix. The problem was that most airlines beleived the markets just weren't there. BA was successfully wooed by both PHX and SAN, with the idea that the plane (originally a DC-10-30) would yield enough $$ carrying pax from both cities on the same flight. They were right. The flight was originally 5x/week, and is now daily, and is now flown with a 744.

Other airlines have noticed BA's success and have researched the viability of serving PHX. Last I heard, both LH and KLM were considering flight, but initially using there charter/special markets offshoots. For KLM this would be Martinair, and for Lufthansa it would probably be Condor.

Apparently international traffic is set to increase in PHX. Canada 3000 may switch to services all year around, and Aeromexico now flies non-stop to MEX. America West just added an additional daily flight to MEX, and Air Canada now operates their flight to YYZ with an A320 instead of the orignal A319. Do you know if LTU will be back in the summer?

I remember when the only international flights out of PHX were the old Delta 737-100s (inherited from Westen) that flew to Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta three times/week!

Kras Air doesn't fly into PHX, and I don't believe that LTU is coming back. The heavies that we get are the BA 744, numerous DL 767s, NW DC-10s (with an occasional 747 thrown in), UPS 767, Fedex DC-10, United 767 (with DC-10s beginning soon) Also, because PHX is a resort destination, many heavy charters can also be found.

Hopefully, Luftansa and KLM will begin their service, and if the market takes off, I'd expect Air France, Swissair, and a few others to join in as well.

It is also rumored that the BA 744 will become a 777 later this year.

Saul

Well,I saw the Delta 777(What A Site!!!) and I see the NWA and Sun Country DC-10's quite frequently. I watched an Air Canada 767 land onto 8L Sunday. BTW,I hope Lufthansa and KLM start operations into PHX.

Does anybody know anything about America West getting some heavies and crossing oceans again? They did it before, maybe the time is coming again.
