Hi to all-
I thought about it. When Sept. 11th was shutdown all U.S. carriers to ground and two days later Sept 14th was return to service air. Who was the first airline up in the air? Can anyone know about this or verify?

The first flights back in the air were domestic diversion recovery flights by US Part 121 operators. This was followed by international diversion recovery flights by US operators from Canada ONLY, intra-US diversion recovery flights by non-US operators, diversion recovery from Canada ONLY by non-US carriers and finally diversion recovery by US operators from outside Canada. Non-US carriers were NEVER PERMITTED to complete diversion recovery flights that were diverted to places other than Canada. One-time ferry permits were issued to ferry aircraft out of the United States (eg. SAA 747), but no revenue traffic was carried.

on the nite of the 12th morning of the 13th we (acr) had a dash-8
operate a special flight yhz-yjt-yqx-yhz.it departed yhz on the
13th at approx 0030 local to bring air canada mechanics to yjt and yqx
at the request of several airlines that needed tech support.i think we
dropped 6 techs at yjt and 8 techs at yqx.i dispatched the flight but
can not remember the flight number.special permission was given by the
rcmp who im sure got permission from higher sources.

Where I work we where flying from the afternoon of 11th on.
It took a few hours for Leon Minnetta's minions to realize that they needed to allow Medivac flights to take place. Hopefully the only time I will ever see where a flight plan clearance would have to come from NORAD.
I was told be several of my pilots that it was really weird to be zooming around the sky at night and absolutely nobody was on the radio and nobody else was in the sky.
As soon as the time was announced on the 14th, There was a line all down Lake Hood of floatplanes belonging to guide outfits waiting to get off. They where in the middle of hunting season when the attacks happened, and a lot of their clients had been stranded in the bush at the end of their trips with diminishing supplies and no way of knowing why they had not been picked up by their air services.
It was a really busy day that day.
