Over recent reports, I have heard that TAESA has ran out of money. The reports say that TAESA did not find the necessary investors to inject $150 million dollars to return the airline back to service. At first it was believed that TAESA was to resume service because it had stated that it had found new investors, however, it now seems that this is not the case. Under the Mexican laws, TAESA can not resume service because it does not have enough capital to ensure normal opperations and the proper maintenance for it's aircraft.

Already the other Mexican airlines are fighting to gain TAESA's route authorites. Yesterday ALLEGRO (A charter airline) filed with the secretariat of air transport to take over some of the unused routes. Today AVIACSA followed suit by filing for the Tijuana to Mexico city, Guadalajara, & Leon routes.

So far it is known that TAESA has not paid it's employees since the airline shut down. The employees have protested at Mexico city international airport and Downtown Mexico city for the gov. approval to let TAESA resume service. However, during the early part of the shut down TAESA's own flight attendant union anounced that they would go on strike if they were not paid their original wages. It seems clear to me that TAESA's unions were all leed by the same ineffective management that ran TAESA into the ground. The employees never really went on strike and if they would have done so, it wouldn't have done them much good.

As I mentioned earlier, TAESA first said, that they were going to reinstate service with a reduced fleet of 19 aircraft instead of the original 31. Taesa also stated that they had finished inspections on their aircraft and were ready to resume service. TAESA said that it was in a hurry to resume service as cash was running low. During the first month of the shut down, TAESA was at a low $30 million dollars. However, the Gov. said that TAESA could resume flying if it gathered the $150 million.

Personally, all though many will not agree! I believe that Mexico can do fine without TAESA. The other airlines can provide a much safer and reliable service than TAESA ever did. During TAESA's shut down, the other mexican airlines expanded their fleets while making a profit. TAESA was charging ridiculouse low fares, for example: $18 dollars from Mexico city to Acapulco ***(According to my correspondent Joaquin in Mexico city)

I believe that Mexican aviation, like the country, should always progress and move forward. With TAESA it only moved backward. Although many jobs have been lost, I hardly think that the economy would suffer. For the measly paychecks that the employees received ($20 dollars for a flight attendants day work) it was very ridiculouse.

Now we just have to wait for the official release of the Secreteriat of Air Tranport to verify the news. The national routes will go quickly but it will be interesting to see who will receive rights for the international route authorities to Texas, Oakland CA,& Chicago Ill,
