Today, or should I say yesterday, being it is early Saturday morning, today was a rather awesome day. Yesterday afternoon, just after our mid day departure left flight 290, around 1645 we get a call that a flight is making a diversion to PNS, we run out to the gate area and wait for the plane, all we know is that the plane needs fuel, when the 717 touches down I noticed that it stopped rather quickly and thought, this plane must be light....when it pulled into the gate I noticed it was ship number N993AT #765, I knew this was the newest plane as I have seen a pic of it on this site, as I walked up the jetway and quickly noticed there were no passengers on board, only three individuals, when entering the cabin I saw where there was paper taped to the floor thoughout the cabin, much like plastic is covered on new vehicles seets, the smell of the cabin was wonderfuly new, the people on board informed us that they were on a delivery flight and were in route to Orlando and had come directly from Long Beach, they said normally when weather is good they can fly directly, but weather caused them to stop in Pensacola, it was truly an awesome experience, I watched when the bird lifted off rather quickly....an experience that is very few and far between, they said that there are about three more at present on the assembly line for AirTran a couple in the paint department and by years end AirTran should have nearly fifty 717's....and there is word that AirTran has placed an order for 6 737-800's that will be nice as well.
Look forward to them joining the AirTran fleet.
JMH

I'll be in PNS on Tuesday (on the 11:35 Delta flight though), but it'll be weird seeing AirTran finally in PNS. Where exactly are the counters, and how many jetways does FL have? I imagine 1, cause when I was there last year, it didn't seem like there was too much space left for any growth (only that one "gate" at the end of the terminal).
JMH, you working tuesday, and where do you work exactly? Also, are people still allowed to come to the gate to greet people (this is something that I've only seen PNS do (well being from NYC they don't let us even come close)).

That's pretty cool....that might be the first time that PNS has had a delivery flight. Thanks for the update, Jmh.

Jcxp15, yes Airtran has one gate/jetway which is Gate 6. There are actually two more gates that can handle jet aircraft (Gates 5 and 8), however they do not have jetways attached and are currently unoccupied.....so there is more room for growth. When they expanded the terminal, they also expanded the counter area which helped make room for FL. I'm not sure if there is enough counterspace to fit another airline in though.

PNS has a sterile concourse like all airports now so you can't meet people at the gate. There is a small waiting area outside of security near the giftshop.

Jcxp15,
Good to see you will be traveling to Pensacola, our area is really awsome place, espcially in the summer time at the good ole beach, plenty of beautiful scenery if ya know what I mean...
I will be working Tuesday but will not come in till 1500 (3:00pm) and will be working on the ramp.
Delta is a good airline, not gonna put them down at all, but do give us a shot, we have very reasonable fares and an airline on the move, adding new destination left and right.
**Also, about people going into the streale boarding area, we only allow passengers to be accompanied to the gate if they are elderly and need special attention or if the pax is a UM (unaccompanited minor) and even then only one person is allowed with the passenger to the gate.
Hope you enjoy your stay in PNS.
Michael.

AirTran's website now lists the fleet consisting of 25 DC-9s and 39 717s. I've been hearing of the 737NGs for quite some time. Any more details?

Ask Airtran, probably they will tell you something about the 737NG...

I would have flied FL, but Delta's prices were just a little more expensive, and since I'm a FF I need miles (also I have a confirmed seat, and got to pick it). other than that, I would have definately flied FL. I consider PNS like my second home almost, I spend probably 2 months out of the year down there, and have a lot of family and friends there, and have done everything there is to do there (I stay right on Scenic Hills, where do you live?). It's great in the summer time, but it's way too humid. I always laugh when the humidity is like 60% here, and they say wow it's so humid here today, cause I always know in PNS it's like 90%. It's really bad there... Besides that, I love PNS, it's just somewhat old (people wise) and not like NYC.

Ive lived here all my life, Pensacola is my home. It is always great to visit places, but there is no place like home. I started my life here and while I will likely move to other places through job opportunities etc, I will definitly look to one day retire in or around this area.
I live on the northeast side of town.
Regards,
JMH

Jcxp15 - Hope you enjoyed Delta...it's a great airline. Remember that when they are charging you their real fare after Airtran leaves town. Delta's fare was based on Airtran's fare.

Did you know that for just $25 per segment you could have upgraded to Airtran Business Class? First Class seating, two free drink coupons, better snack.

Did you make that right choice after all?

Bonanza

Yea, i know, and i really wanted to fly FL, at least to try it out, but with my Delta FF miles and all, (plus I wasn't paying for the ticket), i had to fly Delta. They offered confirmed seating, and I could pick my seat, plus I'm on a 767-300 out of LGA, and most importantly I'm getting FF miles which I need. I'm also going back PNS-ATL-CVG-JFK, something AirTran couldn't do.
AirTran would be great if they still offered those student fares, but for almost the same price I can get miles, pick my seat, fly on many different types of A/C and know what I'm getting... I still am going to try FL out one day...
