When the expansion of MSY's Concourse D is completed (from the current 6 to 14 gates), Continental Airlines will move it's operation to D. This will leave Southwest with the entire Concoure B....13 gates with jetways. They will apparently take over all of the gates. Look for massive expansion from New Orleans from Southwest. Rumors abound that Northwest and USAirways could move to D as well, which which give WN 6 more gates on Concourse A.

Pretty exciting stuff!!!!

I can't wait to see MSY-MDW and MSY-SEA nonstops from Southwest. You know it will happen soone or later.

Yep, the plans are for concourse D to be extended to 14 gates, and move CO, NW, and US from concourses A and B to D; this frees up A and B for SW, though we will be looking at renovating that area in the mean time (new concessions, consolidating the checkpoints into one checkpoint in the east lobby).

The timing of all this is not yet known, but the extension of concourse D should begin soon. However, we're looking at at least a 2-year construction period on the extension (taking into account foundation concerns not found at other airports).

Perhaps AirTran could add some flights and gates there as well. Maybe they ought to start some flights further west from there. Yes, MSY is barely an hour's flight from ATL, but it could be a good focus city if they don't go toe-to-toe with Southwest, which would be a death wish, because nobody has ever really come out successful in a fare war with Southwest.

Sweet! The A Concourse isn't the most aesthetically pleasing hall at MSY. It's nice that NW can move to a quality facility like the D Concourse, and WN can expand and lower fares from New Orleans to the nation.

Does anyone have a timetable for the NW move to the D concourse?

Good for MSY, getting more gate space open. If Southwest is taking all those B gates, they probably are actually planning expansion. From what I've read over the years here and elsewhere, WN is probably the only carrier that could produce substantial growth at MSY. Certainly the Cartel has not historically considered MSY a growth airport. Is the business market in the New Orleans area, and thus yields, weak? But at a city the size of NO, especially one with strong tourist appeal, that set of circumstances is more or less a red flag waved in WN's face.

Where high-yield traffic growth lacks, sometimes low-fare traffic growth awaits. Best of luck to MSY in obtaining WN growth.

NWA Man,

I have a meeting with my boss in about an hour. I'll ask him if he knows anything more about the time frame.

Concourses A and B were both built in 1974, and haven't been upgraded since, so it about time.

OK, here's the official scoop, and this confirms a thought I had had a while back: the extension on concourse D is still in the design phase. It would still have to go through the bid and review process, etc, etc. So it'll be awhile before anything gets going.

Also, CO has not yet signed off on moving to D. So, there will be that hurdle to jump. With a lease in place, and the rates and charges higher on D than they are on B, we can't force them to move.

Tom, thanks for the quick reply. I had a feeling it would be a while before the move took place...didn't think D had the capacity for NW and CO to move over.

One more question...would the ticket counters remain in the same place? I know DL's is near the D concourse entrance, far from the rest of the airlines in the terminal commons area. I'm just not sure if there's space for NW and CO to add counters in the D concourse.

NWA Man,

I had the same thought regarding available ticket counter space in Delta's lobby, especially since JetBlue had moved in there as well last year. There is some open counter space to the left of Delta's area, but I'm not sure that everybody (especially CO with the counter space they currently have in the east lobby) could make the move. NW and US could probably move OK by themselves, but CO requires a bit more space.
