Olympic announced the launching of a new flight, that will link Heraklion and Brussels via Thessaloniki for the summer period. The airline will be using a newly leased B737-300 on this route.

The schedule of the twice-weekly flight is:

TUESDAY: Heraklion (HER) departure: 14.00
Thessaloniki (SKG) arrival: 15.00 - departure: 15.45
Brussels (BRU) arrival: 18.45 - departure: 19.45
Thessaloniki (SKG) arrival: 22.25 - departure: 23.05
Heraklion (HER) arrival: 00.10

THURSDAY: Heraklion (HER) departure: 04.50
Thessaloniki (SKG) arrival: 05.50 - departure: 06.35
Brussels (BRU) arrival: 09.35 - departure: 10.35
Thessaloniki (SKG) arrival: 13.15 - departure: 13.50
Heraklion (HER) arrival: 14.55

This flight is obviously replacing the dropped SKG-BRU 717 route. But Olympic is adding the HER-SKG part, which will also be a domestic service. Do you think the route will be successful, considering the the low demand, especially from HER, the weird hours and the fact that Olympic already has 12 weekly flights from Athens to Brussels?

If anybody knows more about this flight could you answer some questions for me please? Will this flight continue after the summer, perhaps without the HER-SKG part? And how was the SKG-BRU service doing before it was dropped recently? And SKG-CDG and -AMS?

Plus I wonder where this 737-300 is coming from...

Thanks for the news!!

I would prefer to see the B717 here. It was the only customer untill now who used that aircraft to EBBR.

Frederic

Those flights are operated by Macedonian Airlines with its B737-400s according to reservation systems.

According to my information (which I got here on the forum), three additional B737-300s have already arrived or will arrive within the next few weeks, ex-Germania aircraft. A photo of SX-BLB is already in the database, in a nearly all-white livery.

Interesting news to hear about the new SKG-BRU route. Whether the route will be a success or not depends on the number of Greek people living in Brussels, I think. There won't be much business traffic, maybe a little bit of holiday travel (Belgians spending their holiday in Thessaloniki). But most of the passengers will probably be Greek people who live in BRU and travel "home" once or twice every year. I know many Greek, and everybody seems to have a house on the Island of Crete. 90% of the passengers on Olympic's flight ATH-SKG-STR-SKG-ATH are Greek who spend the summer "at home".
Reading the Olympic timetable, it's not so unusual for Olympic flights to leave so early in the morning, or to return late after midnight. I always thought the Greek simply have another attitude towards time. But who am I to tell you about Greek and their attitudes..

They operated the first flight today to Brussels:

According to http://www.sabena.be/SRADIStart.nav:

Sched. Exp. Arr.
OA 143 HERAKLION (HER) 17:45 17:42 17:42 B717 LANDED

So here they say that it is a B717.

According to http://www.brusselsairport.be:

02/07 17:45 Heraklion OA 143 17:43 B734 LANDED
via Thessaloniki

Here they are talking about a B734.

Who knows what it is?

@Thomas_Jaeger:

I saw already an OA flight landing at Brussels from Athens. It was fully painted in Macedonian Airlines colours.

Frederic

I can't believe they used a 717 to BRU today. SX-BOA is still not yet in service, as it had an incident at STR last week. Another 717 spent the afternoon flying the daily STR service. So there is only one 717 left, which spent the afternoon probably on the SKG-LGW-SKG flight. A 734 is much more likely.
