I just obtained a copy of the November 1, 1986 edition of the Delta timetable. I was wondering what happened to Rio Airways? It served Dallas/Ft. Worth, Lawton, Wichita Falls, San Angelo, Killeen, Waco, Texarkana, and Bryan/College Station.

Jhooper,
I just wanted to let you know a little about Rio. They flew into DFW International Airport back in the late 70's - the late 80's and operated out of the old terminal 4E ( Delta's terminal ). The aircraft that were operated by Rio was the Beech 1900 and De Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter. Later in the 80's Rio started operating the De Havilland Canada DHC-7 Dash 7 as their passenger loads started to increase. The aircraft were all painted a dull yellow color with the word Rio in red/orange. The airline merged with ASA back in the late 80's or early 1990.
I am surprised that there is no photos in the database for Rio. I used to live next to DFW Airport and took many many pictures of Rio Airways. I will try to get some of those pictures scanned so that they can be included on Airliners.net.

I remember they operated a feeder service for TranStar (Muse Air) very briefly. They called it something like "TranStar SkyLink." I don't believe it lasted long, I just remember seeing it written in small print beside the door as you boarded a Rio aircraft.

I used to work as an aircraft mechanic for RIO in Killeen. We had BE-99's, then transitioned to DHC-6's Twin Otters. I've pulled up pictures of a 99, Twin Otter, MetroLiner, and DHC-7 from airliners.net. "Patience young Luke, use the force"

Rio was dropped by DL due to Rio's internal problems. DL then brought in ASA from ATL. Rio and ASA did not merge and have nothing at all in common with each other corporatewise. There was a long thread about XO a while back but I did a search and could not find it. Rio started out in very South TX hence the name Rio in CRP in 1967. They merged with Hood Airlines (FT.Hood) and moved to Killeen. They also flew to TN/AR.

Funny I kind of stumbled on this thread. Can't tell you too much about the airline itself, but it sticks out in my mind for two reasons:

1. My old boss (LtCol) had broken time when he left the Corps as a young-un and flew for Rio before coming back in. He said the airline sucked.

2. The first officer (PF) of the Continental DC-9 that crashed in Denver got canned (right before getting hired by CO) by Rio. They did an article on him in the Wall Street Journal years back. Getting canned by Rio would be like a FSU player getting kicked off the team for disciplinary problems (wait, I guess that happened to Randy Moss).

Anyway, for the genius who couldn't find Rio pictures with their beautiful 70s motif (BTW, I just saw John Travolta in Urban Cowboy last night):

Thank you TT737FO for posting those pics. I only wished they were still around because apparently they used to fly into my local airport (College Station). Now we only get Eagle and Continental Express; wish we had a Delta Connection into here.

I also have many photos of XO as I live close to DFW. Also at one time there was a DL service through ASA in CLL. I flew it many times as my sister was at A&M.

When was this ASA service discontinued? What equipment did they operate?

TT, are you sure you aren't thinking of Peter Warrick, or his friend Laveranues Coles?

Coles was kicked off the team around 1999/2000 when he and Warrick were caught stealing a large sum of merchandise from a Florida store. Warrick, being the tremendous star he was, stayed on the team but suffered a suspension, Coles was ditched. AFAIK, Randy Moss hasn't been kicked off of any teams for disciplinary purposes; he still wears a Vikings jersey. By the way, he went to school at Marshall, not FSU.

Yep, there's Warrick, Coles, Janickowski (KICKER), etc...to add to the list.

Moss was kicked off the Seminoles in 1996 after testing positive for drugs. Bowden admitted that Moss would have brought a national championship, but he simply could not handle him.

You are correct in noting that Moss ended up at Marshall.

Getting back to Rio...

point was, this was a hurting airline. They canned a pilot (who simply could not fly). Continental picked that guy up within a matter of weeks, and he was at the controls of a DC-9 that crashed in Denver.

The DC-9 accident was attributed to the Captains use of cocaine. According to the autopsy report, he had used the drug prior to this flight. I'm sure that the first officers in-experience contributed, but he was not the primary cause. I was discharged from Rio, and now work at Continental, are you condemning me also?
