Flight West Airlines, left behind by the Ansett collapse, has started to relaunch new flights and service. Operating Fokker 100 Jets on Townsville to Brisbane flights and EM2 aircraft from Gladstone to Brisbane, the carrier has had a shrunken network and frequency of flights for many months. Starting July 8, new flights are to be introduced on the Townsville to Brisbane sector, all operated by the Fokker 100 jet. There will be 6 depatures each week on each north and south-bound flight.
In addition to increasing F100 services, the Brisbane-Gladstone-Brisbane route will not be neglected. A total of 18 flights perweek linking Brisbane and Gladstone and 18 flights per week for the return route will be scheduled.
Flight West has traditionally been the contract carrier for the many mines west of Townsville, and currently has contracts with the Western Mining Corporation and Pasminco. Contract flights will be operated by the Fokker 100 jet.
Inflight services offered by Flight West will also be upgraded. For the first time since the Ansett collapse last September, business class will be available, breaking the current monopoly held by Qantas in the market, at least on the Townsville-Brisbane sector. Fares will be much more substantially better than Qantas, and designated 2+2 leather seating on the F100 with 42 inches pitch is priced at just AUD$321.68 one way, compared to the Qantas business class fare of AUD$582.90. Full business class service will be available to Flight West Business class passengers.
Main cabin customers will enjoy lower fares generally ranging from AUD$220 to AUD$270 return from Townsville to Brisbane vv. Seating in the main cabin will be 3+2, and inflight catering can be purchased onboard the aircraft.
Flight West Airlines will announce a new corporate livery and airline name soon.

Good news indeed. But - correct me if I am wrong - to the best of my knowledge Flight West was not a subsidiary of Ansett, but owned by the Buchanan family until the Buchanans decided to volontarily liquidate the company in June 2001. The Ansett link used to be some sort of commerial co-operation, including flights under the ansett umbrella (unlike other Ansett airlines, Fligh West never had aircraft painted in Ansett's livery etc. etc.).

You are correct sort of. Yes it was entirely separately owned. However they did do flights as both codeshare and also on behalf of AN (some only had an AN flight code). Also its aircraft did have AN tails in the early 90s (as did Impulse which also was not AN owned). This was in the short lived Australian flag livery.

I'm rabid with excitement with what the new airline will be called and what the corporate colours will be...I'm hoping for some sort of Ansett inspired colour scheme deliberately chosen by the managers etc to pay tribute to Ansett or something like that...I'd be in heaven!!!

I only wish they would have tendered for the Cairns - Weipa route and won it then we could say goodbye to the useless QF / QFlink Dash 8s and pathetic service and hello again to the lovely F100 and the great (ex-)Flight West service.
