Yak 42 Graveyard At Bykovo -

In reading recent magazine articles the Moscow airport of Bykovo has been described as a "graveyard" for the Yak-42, as the old Aeroflot fleet of the planes flew from there.

What I am wondering is why the airport is considered a "graveyard" and why are so many of the planes thus unserviceable? The Yak-42 is not a very old design (ie 20 years old, about the same as MD80) so why the high attrition rate?

I was wondering the same when I saw these photos of Jakob Dahlgaard Kristensen showing Yak-42D wfu in various Ukrainian airports: UR-42416 and -419 were built in 1992, 42449 in 1994!

In fact many Russian airports can be considered as graveyard: approximately half of the entire fleet of Aeroflot Soviet Airlines was withdrawn from use in the last decade. Many airlines have not enough money to maintain all their aircrafts. I remember seeing about 10 wrecked Tu-154 in Irkutsk in 1997 ; many wfu Tu-154 are rusting in Vnukovo:

Thoughts:

Bykovo is a major overhaul / rework centre. Given that the Russian airlines have on the whole got more airplanes than they know what to do with, many of the Yaks may be just awaiting overhaul... I've seen this system in Russia in the past, where they park airplanes in need of an overhaul, and sort of rotate the ones they operate, overhauling the parked ones only when the next one is needed in service to cover for an active airplane that's just reached the need for overhaul.

When I was at Bykovo, many of the Yaks seemed to be missing engines, rather than being totally derelict. Could be that engines are more of an issue.

In general though, it does seem that Russian airlines sometimes park airplanes that are not that old... Seen a fair few generally tatty looking Tu-204s, IL-86s and even the odd IL-96 laying around Moscow airports missing things like engines.

It is probbably the same reason as to why there are TWA 717s in storage in USA.
But still, there are lots of Tu134s and even some Il18s still flying in Russia.
I personaly really like the Yak42 and think it would be great in a lot of fleets.
