Justplanes.com reports:

"Is planning to start service from Port of Spain to Amsterdam.
BWIA would operate 2 flights a week on this route."

This is totally new to me. Are these flights going to go non-stop, or are they going to stop in the smaller islands on the way to Amsterdam?

I heard BWIA were planning to start new services either to Amsterdam, Frankfurt or Zurich because they need a new European destination to reach a better aircraft utilization for their A340-300s than they needed for the L-1011-500s. I still hope for ZRH, though.

I heared also that AMS was on BWIA's list. One of the main reason is rumoured to be that BWIA wants to get a piece of the AMS-PBM market which is quite attractive

This seems to be true, 2 times per week with BeeWee to AMS on their new A343s.......POS-Antigua or Barbados-AMS.

What LJ said above is true, BWIA wants a piece of the Suriname-Netherlands market that is now monopolized by KLM; the fares on that route are quite expensive. Suriname was a colony of the Netherlands, and thus there are many ties between the countries, as well as family members travelling back and forth for visits, so it is a good market - KL flies a 743 on the route daily most of the year - BWIA hopes that this will be a base off of which to launch the new service.

Just my opinion, but I would think Antigua would be a better stopover point, as they could utilize that long overdue alliance with LIAT to offer connecting service to St. Maarteen, which would be quicker on the European-bound leg than KL service via Curacao (or is i Aruba). And 2 times a week would beat KLs weekly service.

So are I guess that we in Barbados will see the 340s on a more regular basis.
If the traffic on the route is good do you think that the airline might even consider a flight originating from Suriname to Amsterdam. That would be great. When the country is upgrade back to cat 1 ( this may happen by this time next year as election to break the deadlock of the last one are to be held before October 31st) they might put the 737 on the suriname route.

Don't wory AMSMAN, Port of Spain is no where near Europe!
It's the capital of Trinidad and Tobago, a small island nation off the North East coast of Venezula.

Happy to hear such kind of good news and I hope and wish that KLM will get one day some concurence on the Amsterdam-Paramaribo route!!! I will fly next year to Suriname to visit some family there but the ticket price is very high because of the monopoly of KLM on this route!!! But I still hope that one day......

WOW, This is great NEWS!!!
If this really happens, KLM will have to drop there $$$ fares !
I'm also sick and tired to fly the 743 they use on the PBM - AMS route, They use such an old bird, time for a renewal.
Also I rather make a short stop in POS and transfer to the new A340 and then continue with pleasure on to AMS.
Go BWEE!!! We want see more action happening in the Caribbean!!! Right?
Especially the airport of Suriname "Zanderij" needs some more flights taking off and coming in, if it is Surinam Airways or not, cause right now the place is pretty dead.
I sure hope Bwee can take a look at this market and can make it work...

BWIA will make this route work as the airline needs to operate more flights with the 340s to make fullest use of them. They also want to expand and as they cant do this with their current condition of Cat 2 with the US the are focusing on the regional and European sector.

Sounds interesting but the last time BW tried to serve AMS and PBM (about 6 years ago) they were blocked from doing so. I cannot recall who denied them the route though.

Trintocan.

Hop to it, fly for life!
