Is there any significance to the number at the top of AC tails, other than another system of identifying planes? Is this practice unique to AC or is it common among carriers?

It is a fleet number, common to many carriers.

Sleekjet,
Each Fin # is significant to each A/C type

I.E. Fin #'s 901-910 are A340, 931-938 are the A330

As I would assume most carriers use the Reg as I.D. We use Fin #'s
Fleet size has a lot to do with that.

Cheers,
ACG
