LOS ANGELES, June 24 (Reuters)

Self-professed "airline geek" and actor John Travolta on Monday earned a new pair of wings as a first officer for Qantas Airways and unveiled a world tour to promote air travel that has weakened since Sept. 11.

Travolta, an avid pilot and Oscar-nominated star of movies from "Saturday Night Fever" to "Pulp Fiction," trained with Qantas and on 747 simulators at Boeing Co. in Seattle and was now officially "Ambassador-at-large" for the Australian airline.

Shortly after Qantas (QAN) Chief Executive Officer Geoff Dixon pinned the golden wings on Travolta, who was wearing a crisp blue aviator's uniform, the actor called the moment "one of the proudest days of my life."

"Without crying here, I would say it's at least alongside the two Oscar nominations I've received in my career. It's right up there with that," Travolta told reporters.

Travolta, 48, said as far back as when he was 4 years old, he wanted his own pilot's uniform. He began taking flying lessons at age 16 and earned his jet pilot's license in 1981. Since then, he has logged 5,000 hours of flying time.

"Besides my serious attitude toward flying, I have to admit something to all of you, I am an airline geek," Travolta said.

He has a son named Jett, and joked that he wanted to name his daughter "Qantas," but wife Kelly Preston wouldn't allow it.

Travolta said his new plans stem from a tour he took to Australia last summer to promote his action thriller, "Swordfish."

Travolta owns a vintage Boeing 707 that was first flown by Qantas, and when he arrived in Australia in the plane, he said, it caused quite a stir. He asked to meet with Dixon and told him if Qantas would return his 1960s plane to its original colors, he would fly around the world to promote the airline.

The movie promotion took place shortly before the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and Pentagon in Washington, D.C.

After the attacks, he and Dixon decided to broaden the scope of his promise to promote not just Qantas, but the airline industry and flying, in general, Travolta said.

"Personally, I can not think of a better ambassador for Qantas than John," Dixon said.

So, in his freshly painted 707 dubbed the "Jett Clipper Ella," on July 1, Travolta will take to the air from Los Angeles and head to Auckland, New Zealand to begin the 10-nation "Spirit of Friendship" tour.

Other destinations will include Sydney, Melbourne and Perth in Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo, London, Rome, Paris, Frankfurt and New York.

The star will use the Boeing 747 to fly to film premieres around the world.

His spokesman says: "He believes this investment will save him loads of time over the next few years and of course he gets to choose who gets on board with him."

Can anyone tell me which model of 747 did he buy, 747-400, 300 or 747sp? Thanks!

You guys, both those reports are old (look at the dates) and they've been discussed before.
He didn't buy a 747.

It was rumored that he was in talks for a B-747SP, but the deal was never made and the airplane was flown to Marana, AZ to be broken up.

The next plane that he supposedly had his eye on was a 747 "Classic," which would most likely mean a B-747-238B.

I still think a 70s-style "Vinnie Barbarino" picture of Travolta needs to be on the tail, though.  Big grin

Travolta's B707 painted in Qantas vintage livery landed at YVR about 10 days ago, most likely coming from Sidney via Honolulu. Of course the plane was serviced at Shell VIP terminal.

This question about buying a 747 was brought up at the press conference at LAX and Travolta said himself that any rumor of him buying a 747 is false. He does not need one, he is happy with his 707.

JT has no intention of parting company with his beloved B707-138B.
He has not bought any B747 of any variant.
( Both SPs are now scrap at Marana ).
The B707-138B arrived in Sydney on the evening of Thursday 11th July.
From LAX, flew via Vancouver, Honolulu, Papeete - Tahiti, and Auckland.

Question...

Does Travolta fly his 707, or does he have pilots to fly him? I would assume he has pilots, but I would also assume a self-proclaimed "airline geek" would want some time at the controls of his own classic airliner.

JT has about 5 crew on his plane. At least that is how many jumped off the plane in Auckland wearing pilot uniforms. He said in an interview with Homles last night, that he just likes to fly the fun parts the landing and take off. He goes to the back of the plane with his wife and kids. He is first officer in the 707 and 747. And also he is captain on a ton of business jets. He rambled off about 10 different jets that hes type rated in. He seems like a really nice genuine man. A lucky one at that.

An interesting (and little mentioned) detail is that he is only a private pilot.

Congrats John Travolta!  Big thumbs up
The Boeing 707 is one of my favorite jets and I am glad that a celebrity like John Travolta is bringing good publicity to the industry.

That was be awesome if he would star in a movie as a pilot.

Jjbiv,

How can he only hold a PPL? He must have instrument, multi, and complex ratings. He has type ratings on business jets, for crying out loud! Those are rather complex and do tend to have two engines. And if he's flying them anywhere I doubt it's VFR.

Does he only do the FO thing on the other jets, as well, similar to what he does with his 707?

I can't fathom him only holding a private and being able to fly all those planes.
