Did it make the landing back at Barrow or was it mid-route?

It went back to Barrow.

There isn't a whole lot between FAI and BRW.

In fact AFAIK other then Barrow the only other place that they can go up on the slope is Deadhorse, which is 175 miles away. Everywhere else is too short, or is an old haul road support airport that has long since been abandoned.

It was a/c 743, departed and returned to BRW. Engine swap was planned for today a/c 741 was ferried ANC-BRW with the replacment. A/C 740 was ferried ANC-BRW to transport the pax from the original flight...

You can take the pup out of Alaska, but you can't take the Alaska out of the pup.

Of course Dahl Creek would have some issues too.

As far as I can tell Dahl Creek and Galbraith lakes are the only places between BRW and FAI that you could set a 737 down, more then once.

I found a couple of other options....

They could have gone to:

A:ATQASUK

B:UMIAT

But those are around the local area. Anything else you are headed over to Deadhorse or Alpine or somewhere.
