Hey,

Does anyone know why the rebranded TWA S-80s in AA's fleet were repainted without the black nose? Personally I think they look better without the black nose, however, I was just curious as to why the difference. They also left out the "Super 80" titles on these planes. Why?

That is strange. They put SUPER 90 on the Ex-Reno MD90s

and before they put Super 90 on the nose of the MD90's, they were flying around with Super 80 on the nose. OOOPPSSS

The black nose is a neoprene boot cover used to protect the radome from damage. Now they have paint that is just as good as the black boot. So its up to the airline. As for why they don't call the TWA MD-80s "Super 80s" I dont know.

I really like the AA blackdot, but I am happy the TWA ones do not have them as that makes them about 99% easier to identify as the reg isn't always easy to see.

They are different planes than AA's original 80s, so maybe they aren't "super".

Another way to tell the TWA planes is by the unppainted aluminum where they had to polish off the TWA paint. It looks a little rough in many spots and not as sleek and shiny as the original AA planes

It's not a question of it looking gay or not. I for one like the blacknose, but I think AA thought it wasn't needed or maybe something else. I don't know.

Yes, I agree ... the Super 80's look a lot more slick without the black nose, and yes, I also agree ... that was an ignorant comment made earlier.

Britair,

Like Blink182 said, it's not a matter of it being a really stupid comment. I for one did NOT like the black nose. It's my opinion and nobody can say otherwise.

I must put in my two cents on this. I like the black nose of AA, but I think the MD80's without the black nose look so much better.

An interesting thing that I found is that there is an MD80, one of TWA's, that has the black nose. Here is the TWA MD80 N951TW.

KKMolokai,
What's wrong with the menality of not liking the black nose? I don't like it! The painted nose is much better! That's what this post is all about.

You just don't get it, and that's the whole problem.

JMC, the backlash is not about not liking the black nose, but rather calling it "gay".

KKMolokai,

Yes. I do get it. You post a legitimate thread about the AA MD-80 noses. I reply with my legitimate opinion on the matter. If my choices of words is not what you like, then that's your problem and not mine.

Jmc1975, no one is judging your opinion about the black noses. SOme people like em black, some like em gray. I think both look good. What everyone has a problem with is your choice of words, specifically describing the black nose as looking "gay." While you and your friends may use the word to describe people or things (My friends and I do!) it is not the best choice of words for a public forum such as this.

If you were going to give a speech about the radomes on the AA/TWA MD-80s to an aucience of several thousand people, would you really choose to describe them as "gay?" Or would you use another word that is much less likely to offend some people, such as "stupid" or "in bad taste?"

Posting on this forum is just like giving a speech to a croud of thousands and you need to be careful how you word things. Keep in mind that there are TONS of gay people on this forum and most probably don't appreciate their lifestyle being used to describe a radome (or anything else) in a derogitory manner.

Do ya get it, now?  Smile

Priceless guys,

You guys jump all over someone for saying that something is "gay" looking. But when 20 other members on the forum make fun of overweight people and how the airline's policies affect them, you say nothing.

Priceless.

Looks like only two people commented on his choice of words. The second person comment was made only because he agreed with the first. The REST of the posts were made trying to explain to Jcm that the two comments were not judging his opinion rather his choice of words. I could care less if he said something looks gay. Like I said, I use it around friends all the time. Had he not missed the point of the posts and assumed they were attacking his opinion, this thread would not be as long as it is.
