Just wondering something the other night while looking at stored aircraft
at Marana, etc...
1- The crews that fly in jets to be parked, either long term, or short term
storage, or dismantled, what happens to them once they land at these
places, and how do they leave the facility, once they have landed???
2- Are these crews airline based, or are they dispatched by the storage
people to pick-up the jet to fly it back to its resting place???

For crews ferrying airplanes for storage at Marana, normally they would be flown home on a commerical flight from Tucson. If the plane is owned by an airline, one of their crews would ferry the airplane. If the plane owned by a leasing company or is repossessed, it would likely be flown by a contact crew. As far as what is done with the airplane, that depends on what the owner (whomever that is) is able to do. Short term storage airplanes have to be run up and taxied once a month, usually that is accomplished by a third party maintenance facility, which would also prep the airplane for storage. Long term storage, requires draining fluids, possibly replacing lubricants with a fluid that is designed to prevent internal corrosion and drying out of the seals (pickling), plugging up all areas where birds or bugs could nest; would also be most likely done by a third party maintenance company. Third party maintenance facilities, rarely if ever, have their own flight crews. If the airplane is to be scrapped, usually all useful components are removed for reuse and then the airplane is chopped up (literally).

I was able to ride out to Victorsville, CA on the retirement flight of one of Delta's L-1011s (N736DY). A crew van picked up the crew and drove them 2 hours to Los Angeles where they deadheaded back to Altanta.

A majority of planes put into storage end up being scrapped (707's, Convair 880's/990's or planes with high cycles). The are usually placed into storage because the airline has replaced them with more modern equipment. A small number are placed during a recession or down turn in the market and preserved in the fashion as "Broke" said. Some planes are stored for very short term as in lease transfers. Under this circumstance, they are oinly stored for a short time and prepped (reconfigure the cabin, re spray the livery etc) for the new lessor; as Evergreen does I believe.
