I spent the day alongside the new runway on Sunday and they were using both when there was virtually no traffic - I figured that this was in some way to justify the building of runway 2 by reporting a certain number of movements each year on there when there's no real need for it.
Or perhaps I'm just an old cynic.. ?

Just spotting that I've got the runways fighting each other ...it should, of course, read dual. Can't blame that on the spell checker...have to blame the carbon unit instead.
It's more a case of it being needed Monday to Friday for the peak periods (some 55 to 65 movements an hour are handled then); at weekends, it can seem a bit strange that there are duel operations with relatively little traffic around. My last visit (6th July) saw an average of 32 movements an hour during the 7 hours I was there. No doubt there's a logical reason for both runways to be opened at the weekend (perhaps allowing additional ground control training?).
With a forecast doubling of passenger numbers, I'm glad the runway is already down now. All that's needed is for T2 & T3 to be fully expanded (present terminal capacity is around the 23.5 million mark) in readiness for the extra traffic that may come.

I used to be stationed at MAN in the days before the second runway, when we had Swampy and his stinky bunch tying themselves to trees there.
If I recall correctly, 24L was only to be used primarily for landings... or at least I think that was the promise made to residents of Heald Green to allay their fears of excessive noise. Is this in force right now?
Also, how is the apron situation? I was cynical about the second runway because there was this massive bottleneck between the Monarch Hangar and T1 (or what used to be T1), and us T2 users sometimes had to wait ages for our aircraft to get through that bottleneck. Has that improved?
