The restaurant where Tom Cruise sat in TOP GUN used to be one of my favorite spots to go and grab a bite to eat and spot planes, especially bizjets... (Couldnt take photos though!) Anyway, it looks like the restaurant isnt there anymore! Anyone know if they are building a new one?

The car park I used to go up on says no watching planes now also... Does anyone still go up there?

I usually go to the viewing area now...

Jims Air cafe is gone....  Sad Im sad about that...it was a great place to go get a bite to eat and watch planes. Its gotten pretty drab around SAN. The only place you don't get chased off at is the viewing area across from the coast guard. I wish the SD Port District was a little more spotter friendly. The BEST place though was right in that parking lot where Jims Air is. Now you have to pay....and well...its not very worth it. I know SAN like the back of my hand and there really isn't to many good places to watch. Does anyone know of any "extra secret" places for watching?  Smile

I may be able to get on NTC to watch departures, that used to be an ok place... Arrivals too, but, the weather has to be bad since the ILS is on rwy 9.

It's too bad the Shakespeare Pub near Old Town doesn't have a better view of the traffic. From their porch you can see departures at a distance while enjoying a beer. You might try other restaurants in Old Town... There are other spots up on the hill above the airport from which you can find interesting angles, but you'd probably need a very long lens on your camera for photographing.

The disappearance of the restaurant (at one time JB's, but more recently known as the Windsock) was a real shame. A replacement could be built in the North Terminal if that project goes through...

North Terminal? I haven't even heard about this. LOL....what is it Lindy? Are they gonna build something over buy where airfreight is now? Airborne/Fed Ex area? What is gonna be primarly used for? This is of course if the SDUPD get of their cans.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

The so-called "North Terminal" is a planned 10-gate terminal structure on the site of the current FBO operation (Jimsair etc). If the project gets the final go-ahead, it would end up housing Southwest Airlines, and maybe even Frontier (that's not official, just my guess).

Can anyone tell me which runway is used the most for arrivals at SAN? I'll be departing from there soon and would like to catch a glimpse (not spot since I'll be with my family) of some nice approaches or landings. The last time I was at SAN was years back but I'm sure I'll find my way around.

27, without a doubt. The only time they'll go to 9 is when the ceiling lowers to about 600 feet, precluding use of 27, or winds dictate 9. They're on 27 about 90% of the time...

Yea, and the heavies sometimes cannot use 9 for departure (Over the city) even if the runway being used to land is runway 9. This all has to do with weight. I did see an American 762 depart runway 9, and we, in a NW A320 couldnt take off toward the city "because of our weight" the pilot said... We waited at the end of 27 for about 25 minutes for an opening.

Actually no.. You will prolly not be able to see the aircraft because of the ceilings. If you can get on the old NTC, the approach lights go right thru a portin of the base... Its a very good spot. I might have to pray for some inclement weather, although I wouldnt be able to get good photos then  Sad

Well, when runway 9 is in use because of winds due to storms, the approach can actually be quite amazing. I've seen a DC-10 make final turns over Mission Beach (at around 2500 feet) and line up for landing on 9...it was a great sight.

The North Terminal, off of Pacific Highway, is in the Port District plan for the airport. The goal is to move only Southwest there because they have very little interline luggage and passenger transfers. More importantly, planners want to lessen the traffic congestion on Harbor Drive and the congestion in front the Terminial 1 by moving the Southwest passangers to the other side of the airport. And it frees up gates for expansion of existing and introduction of new carriers to San Diego.

Harbor Dr does need to be eased up abit. Its SO CROWDED....it takes at least 20mins or so just to get downtown when its busy. Its only about 2mi. What would happen with JIMS AIR if they put in the N-Terminal? Would they just move it down towards the tower? Would everything thats already there do a big step to the left (If you are looking at the north side of the field from harbor drive)? And 27 is used about 98% of the time. I've seen numerous heavies take off from 9 without a problem. DL 767 to ATL, DL L1011 to HNL when it was operating. SAN is a fantastic airport with a beautiful background....but Im bored to death with its SINGLE OFFICAL view place. You can only see so many WN 737 from their left side. LOL  Smile

I actually seen some people in that "restricted"parking area to the right of it under the approach path... I went in there with no problems.

Are any of the parking garages available? I used to go up there all the time in the middle 90's... In February, I went to there and it said "No watching Planes" but, your paying for a parking spot to sit up there, I dont know why there would be a problem.

Oh, I went by MCRD today... As long as I dont drive up where the troop run is, I can access anything along the North Side. I sat directly across from the BA 777 and I am extremely close to the runway. I am going to have to assess the situation some more, but, it looks like it will be my alternative to the observation area.
